Pretty brilliant premise, definitely sort of runs out of steam at the end. I honestly didnt finish it - maybe its just my liberal knee jerk reaction, but by the end it was so unbelievably sexist/homophobic/demeaning to women that i couldnt make myself finish it. But its still worth starting at least, it is pretty fascinating. and I mean, the word "grok" is pretty timeless - in fact my boss randomly used it the other day.

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn was a great book. Except for the last couple of pages, Betty Smith took you into pre-WWI Brooklyn with exceptional detail. The book is about a smart girl named Francie Nolan, who lives in the tenements of Williamsburg. Her family literally lives off of pennies a day. Francie's mother favors her brother and is often, very harsh towards Francie. At school, Francie is an outcast because of the way she talks and because she is very shy. Francie lives in an ugly word, yet no matter how bad things get, she always finds a silver lining. Betty Smith does a masterful job of vividly describing every single detail in this book. I had a great time reading it and I encourage everyone to read it as well.
I loved this book! It takes the non-conventional view of american history throught the eyes of the workers and underpriveledged.....i.e. "the people" instead of the patriarchy. Zinn is also a story teller who weaves his (obviously vast) knowledge into the telling of what we think we already know. You will be surprised.

pretty good. amusing at parts, sad at others. David Sedaris is hailed as a god among mortals but really, i wasn't that impressed. don't get me wrong, it was a good book, worth the $5 i paid for it, but i wouldn't pay full price for it.
