Wonderstruck was, as expected, fabulous. I don't think anyone expected any less from this book, and maybe that's why I didn't feel quite as blown away by it as I did by Hugo Cabret. Like I said, it's just as good, maybe even better in the way the story is constructed, I just wasn't surprised by that. The art is amazing. The storyline is great. The reader can kind of make out the inevitable connection that you know will come at the end without it being too obvious. The one thing that really makes Wonderstruck stand out from Hugo is the dual storylines and the way the book switches between them as it switches back and forth between images and words with the two merging in part three. Dual narrators seem to be a big thing right now, and this book takes that to a new level. In short, you won't be disappointed by Wonderstruck. I've already given away my ARC because there's no question that I'll shell out the $30 to have a hardcover copy living on my shelf (next to Hugo, of course).

I really enjoyed this book. For about 3/4 of it, I was sure I was going to give it five stars. There is a lot going on and a lot to love. It would be easy to fall back on my normal complaint that the ending didn't work for me, but in this case, the problem is a little more complex. The book tells the story of two magicians who are rivals and whose lives are intertwined in some fascinating ways. The first half tells the story from the first magician's perspective. This was my favorite part, as it was mixed with all sorts of interesting magical theory (which I find to be very similar to writing theory) and lots of great meta stuff. This was my favorite part. The second half is the story from the second magician's point of view. It, too, was very enjoyable, if more straight forward. In some ways, the two stories are completely different in their scope, their focus, and so on, and so I think my ultimate disappointment came in the story that Priest uses to tie everything together. This story, which shows up at the beginning, the middle and the end, is a modern story about the descendants of these two magicians trying to sort of come to grips with the consequences of their ancestors's actions. For me, this story doesn't work. Read individually, each of the magician's story is powerful and could probably stand on its own as an amazing novel. There needed to be more to tie them together than the character's historical involvement. In the end, the framing story sort of made it so the second magician's story undermined the first, which I think was a mistake. Certainly the second magician's story is more fantastical and incredible, but only in an external way. I wish the framing story had worked better to tie the two accounts together. That said, I thought this was a masterful book. It won the World Fantasy Award and I think it deserved it.

Seit langer Zeit habe ich mal wieder ein Buch auf Englisch gelesen. Und es war nicht nur aus diesem Grund eine wunderbare Abwechslung. Die Geschichte, wenn sie nicht geschrieben wäre, wie sie geschrieben ist, könnte schrecklich langweilig sein. Denn eigentlich passiert nicht sehr viel an dem die Beteiligten aktiv teilnehmen. Vielmehr erfahren sie nur von Dritten über gewisse Geschehnisse oder Dinge, die sie selbst erleben haben, werden erzählt, wenn sie bereits geschehen sind. Aber die Geschichte ist alles andere als langweilig erzählt. Kristin Cashore schreibt wirklich wunderbar und stellt mit eben dieser Schreibweise die Charaktere noch viel stärker in den Vordergrund. Ihr Anderssein, ihre Art damit umzugehen, sich selbst zu finden. Aber auch die Art wie andere sie behandeln, sehen und sie entweder achten oder benutzen. Die Botschaft rückt viel stärker in den Vordergrund. Ebenso die zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen und die innere Entwicklung der Charaktere. Das hat mir besonders gut an diesem Buch gefallen. Es lässt es heraus stehen. Es besticht – genau wie die Charaktere im Buch – durch sein Anderssein.

Good ending and I liked most of the content from present time. I thought the characters in the flashbacks were very singular in scope and depth. Especially the female characters - there seemed to be no respect for them as characters, only objects to move around a story.

Several elements pulled me into this story. First, the characters were believable. From the responsible to the carefree, from the compassionate to the chilling, I've met these personalities in real life. Second, I cared about the main characters. I desperately wanted Dancer to overcome the impact of his early neglect and impoverishment. I felt emotionally invested in him and the surrounding cast. Simply put, I cared. While the first half pulled me in, the second half tightened its grip and refused to let me go. The pace quickened as the story pulled me inexorably to the dramatic conclusion. A very satisfying and personally impacting read. Well written; highly recommended.
