While I loved all the books in this series, I didn't love this one as much as the others because the story lines weren't as well developed and the entire time it seemed as though the two main story lines were supposed to be connected but in the end they were not. But all in all, a great summer read.

I enjoyed the first half (his mother's funeral, the beach day, the murder, the trial), but the second half and Meursault's philosopical musings about God and life were a little more than I could handle. Still a good book to dabble in if you have time :)

One of my all-time favorite literary exerpts comes from this book. It is a segue from one chapter to the next and it is a discussion between two waves who are about to crash upon the shore. One wave is very anxious and doesn't want to be anything other than a wave. The other wave explains that we are not just waves but also part of the ocean...the bigger picture. Very striking passage.
I wasn't sure I was going to like this book; in fact, I was pretty sure I was going to hate it. I flipped through it before sitting down to read it and noticed the lack of punctuation and the weak grammar. Then, I actually started reading it and could barely put the book down. While the "True History" is anything but, Carey does a magnificent job capturing the voice of Ned Kelly, the Australian bushranger who later on became a national hero despite his criminal leanings. Kelly is depicted as a sympathetic hero, driven to a life of crime because of persecution from the police. A better introduction to Ned Kelly than Our Sunshine by Robert Drewe (reprinted as Ned Kelly after the movie release), which seemed to have been written for an Australian audience already familiar with the character. I highly recommend True History to anyone who just loves a good story.

i LOVED this almost as much as i loved eggers memoir, a heartbreaking work of a staggering genuis. interestingly, nearly all the volunteers who read this (with expectations from enjoying the memoir) hated it. the story has a fascinating twist halfway through which leaves the reader frustrated, angry, and feeling betrayed. and i think that's what irritated most other volunteers who disliked it. even though i had those some feelings, i instead felt those emotions proved eggers mastery of fiction-writing, that he could bring out such emotion from a "made-up" story.

this book took me a long while to get into it, but once i did i really enjoyed it. it moved quickly. there were a lot of characters to keep track of and it switches between the past and the present, but i liked the ways the stories were woven together. an interesting read. steeped in history and myth. good stuff.

I liked this book. The main character is in a private boarding high school and has issues with being included in particular clubs where she is not welcome. She is the mastermind behind some major activities and doesn't necessarily get what she wants from it in the end. It was very interesting, but I wouldn't recommend it to my daughter in high school.

A friend told me that if I liked Water for Elephants, I'd love this book. And she was right. Story of a "family" of bonobos (great apes) who can communicate with each other and humans verbally and through ASL...but it's much more than that. It's the story of greed of many who want to exploit these animals, the story of one of the scientists (Isabelle) who thinks of them as family, the story of a reporter who becomes immersed in their story, and the suspense of explosions, kidnapping the apes and, fortunately, a happy ending for all...except the bad guys. I loved it and would read anything Gruen has written after being so enamored with this book.

I saw the movie first, and as a result the book really was nothing like what I had expected. Much like the film versions of The Color Purple (loved the book) or The House of Mirth (hated the book), and countless other adaptations, the film version really took away something that I thought was the heart of the written story, or the point of it. Basically, the book doesn't have the same happy ending as the film. The book does not end with Holly Golightly staying in New York to shack up with a gigolo. Instead, it tells the story that you can't change someone just by loving them, and some restless spirits are never satisfied with sitting still.
