Dylan writes like he talks, which is about sixty percent metaphor, hyperbole, and many other figurative creations. I’m getting a bit hyperbolic myself. But figurative language does seem like Dylan’s natural form of expression. This is a big part of enjoying his autobiography for me. I’ll open the book to a random page and offer an example: “This is a wild song. Big medicine in the lyrics. Heavy action spread out. Each phrase comes at you from a ten-foot drop, scuttles across the road and then another one comes like a punch on the chin. And then there’s always that ghost chorus about the black ship that steps in, fences it all off and locks it up tighter than a drum.” (on “Pirate Jenny,” one of a collection of songs by Bertolt Brecht, which Dylan heard at a theatre rehearsal in NYC) If you’re hoping for chronological explanations of the events of his life, or for names of family members or which wife he is referring to, you will be disappointed. If, however, you’re hoping for a copious list of his influences, music he’s listened to and musicians he has admired and played with, you’ll find plenty of snacks for your musical investigations. These details unfold in five chapters, which in amalgamation are rather broad, but in individual scope quite narrow and in-depth. Dylan’s memory at times appears so acute, I found myself wondering if many of the scenes could possibly be as accurate as the precision with which they are presented suggests. Nonetheless, they’re all delivered with confidence, and, pleased with the imagery, I willingly cast aside my doubts. I believe the five sections of Chronicles must have been chosen because they represent moments in time, brief transitional periods in Dylan’s life that had significant effects on the direction of his musical career and his creative process. As such, each chapter is a fairly generous gift to any fan of Bob Dylan. When I wasn’t reading my hard copy, I listened to the abridged audio version of Chronicles, read by Sean Penn. Penn’s voice was close enough to perfect that I found myself forgetting at times that it wasn’t actually Dylan reading the words. Penn’s deep, smoke-charred voice and mumbly, beat-style monotone delivers the vernacular of Dylan’s words in just the intimate, rather narcissistic style one would expect from the folk-prophet himself.

Bé Học Lễ Giáo - Bubu Tập 32: Bubu Tập Làm Bánh (Tái Bản) Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn
