My Booktalk: Alex Rider’s parents died when he was very young and so his bank-manager uncle Ian takes care of him. His uncle Ian plays sports with Alex, takes him on trips around the globe, signs him up for karate lessons, and hires a housekeeper to look after Alex when Ian goes on his frequent banking trips. Then, when Alex Rider is 14, his uncle dies in a car accident. The police deliver the news to Alex’s housekeeper at their London home. His uncle Ian was driving his BMW, not wearing a seat belt, and a truck hit him at an intersection, killing him instantly. But Alex can’t believe it. Not his uncle. His uncle might have done many things, but not wearing a seat belt wasn’t one of them. But he heard the police telling his housekeeper about the accident. They wouldn’t have lied, would they? But it still nags him. Finally Alex can’t stand it. He can’t believe it’s true until he sees the car for himself. So he figures out which junkyard his uncle’s BMW is most likely to be in. He rides his bike over there and sneaks in when the guard isn’t looking. And he finds his uncle’s BMW. And it’s covered in bullet holes. What Alex Rider ends up learning is that his uncle was not a banker at all, but a government spy. And all the extreme sports, all the karate lessons, all the trips his uncle had arranged for him, have given Alex a head start on some spy-training of his own. So what would you do if you had the opportunity to get revenge on the people who had killed your uncle? And what if you had no choice? Stormbreaker, by Anthony Horowitz. First in the Alex Rider series. (~2+ min.)

Very confusing, could not even finish it. Little dialogue, mostly done in narrative style. Maybe something got lost in the translation?

This book is an excellent example of sub-plot at work, as well as dialogue which helps to develop characters.

Holly Golightly, a grand phony, obliviously falls apart, but keeps climbing up on the backs of those she uses. Wonderful imagery.

This is a biography of The New Yorker magazine's founder and first editor, Harold Ross. It's a great book that paints a well-researched and informative picture of an eccentric guy with a sort of famous demeanor.

Very readable review of American history that almost seems like a fiction novel at times. I learned a lot about the culture and personality behind a lot of famous politicos and otherwise.
Fantastic!
