ok, very disappointing ending. not much of a mystery really, more of a just plain novel. i was excited for a mystery.

Interesting how the object of scorn is by far the most interesting character. Just like in Paradis Lost, Lucifer comes off as more interesting than G-d hmmmm. I would have like to have been Shylock's lawyer. He contracted to receive the pound- not to take it

Riveting! I thought it was a well written perspective on the Holocaust. The twists at the end are stunning. Highly recommend.

Opening line: "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." Briliant. I love this sort of Gulliver's Travels-ish island-hopping adventure fantasy. Every chapter chronicled a new adventure on an uncharted islanand or through uncharted waters. This book sucked me in, and I found myself idenitifying in some way with every character. Lewis had a deep, intuitive understanding of people and what makes them tick. As old as the Chronicles of Narnia are, there is so much truth in them. Regarding Lewis being a racist/sexist: I see no evidence for it. He often takes great pains to illustrate the Calormen who are ethnically different from Narnians, but he never belittles them. In this book, he describes them as "cruel" and "wise," indicating they are a strong, intelligent people. Perhaps if they were fair skinned and didn't wear turbans this wouldn't be an issue. And from what I've read, the women of Narnia are strong women in the most liberal sense. Lucy especially displays her courage while still retaining her femininity. In this book she is more fearless than all the sailors of the Dawn Treader, and has unwavering faith that Aslan will see them through. Yet she is still very much a woman. She is sensitive to Eustace's seasickness and desires to care for him. She gets excited about her new pretty cloaks and scarves from the Lone Islands. She is tempted by a spell that would make her infinitely beautiful (and would make Susan jealous). I think the sexism folks are finding in these books is taken out of context. I guess you hear what you want to hear, right?

It was a really easy read, and by easy I mean quick. It was extremely disturbing, but an amazing story of survival.

Safran Foer *charmingly* (and believably) writes the main character, a young boy who has lost his father in the 9-11 attack on the WTC. I loved the book for its moving portrayal of family tragedy... and joy.

After reading several "kidnapping" themed books recently, I was surprised to like this one as much as I did. VERY interesting storyline, genuine characters and good pace to the story. One of the best books I have read all year.

Alright, so it's not feel-good novel. You have to wonder how the author survived three campaigns and two winters on the Russian front in WWII. And how Sajer managed to capture it with eloquent simplicity, for the most part. He does philosophize at times, when he's stuck trying to explain the unexplainable, but for the most part he just lets his experiences speak. The original was written in French, but the English translation does the topic justice.
