"Literary" fiction at its best. A quiet book tightly focused on the minutia of life in a New England fishing village around the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, the prose is poetry with no frou-frou. I can't say enough good things about it. The "Dunnet Shepherdess" story that's included with my edition was the best, but only because I'd read the book before it. This is going on my "to be read and reread" "take me away to someplace else" pile.

Absolutamente recomendable.

I recently received a copy of Nobody's Child by Austin Boyd to read and review. In a deftly woven tale delving into the topic of bioethics, Laura Ann McGehee resorts to desperate measures to pay the medical bills for her terminally ill father and save the family farm. A young single woman, Laura Ann secretly sells her eggs to a fertility clinic over a period of about a year. When a series of bizarre circumstances put her in contact with a woman carrying a child conceived with one of her eggs, and eventually puts the child in her care, the tangled web that can result from tampering with God's design becomes evident. I enjoyed Nobody's Child. Austin Boyd writes beautifully and the story is poignant, even though the theological issues weren't addressed quite as I'd expected from the description. Thanks to Zondervan for the complimentary review copy. Read more: http://homewithpurpose.blogspot.com/#... Under Creative Commons License: Attribution

I really enjoyed this book. It talked about how in the old days, people started fencing off pieces of ground for their livestock. At first no one like the idea but eventually more and more people did. This book is about cowboys trying to find other cowboys that are cutting the fences. If you like to read westerns, I encourage you to read this one.
I'm not a big fan of Lindsey's, although I like her books enough to read whichever ones I get my hands on. In this one, you've got Tanya, a princess who was smuggled out of her country due to an ongoing blood feud that wiped out the rest of her family. Stefan, the son of the king who took over after her own father died, is her betrothed. He reluctantly comes to America looking for her, but her caretakers died when she was a baby and she got misplaced. He finds her running a tavern in Mississippi. I liked some aspects of this book. I loved the "setup" and have always enjoyed these rags-to-riches stories. However, my enjoyment was kind of ruined by just how disrespectful Stefan and his men are of Tanya. She is given no choice but to leave with them (they literally, seriously threaten to gag her and put her in a crate if she gives them trouble), and because of where they found her, they all from the start assume that she's a whore and often throw it in her face. Stefan finds her so attractive that he usually restrains himself only by avoiding her and by drinking heavily. A "real" hero should be able to stay sober without fear of ravishing his pretty prisoner. Tanya, on the other hand, just like all Lindsey's irrational heroines, is wildly attracted to Stefan even though he's really not very respectful of her and has violently kidnapped her from her home. Her attraction to him, portrayed as a natural and healthy thing, offended me.

This book's situation is eerily forsee-able, which made it pretty interesting. A lot of what has happened to the world/humanity in this novel we have already started to see some of or are on the verge of (genetic modification, lack of oil, global warming, technology we can't control, germ warfare...). It was interesting to see these things taken to their extremes. I really enjoyed the idea of the "Crakers" - especially when they began to know and do more human things (art, religious worship) that were supposed to be programmed out. Their existence also lended a human quality to Crake and made it clear that his motives were very complex. I loved the parts about language and Snowman's recitation of the old words that would be lost if he didn't remember them. Snowman's loneliness is immense and he is amazingly 'good' - to the Crakers, to himself, to the people in his past. My main complaint is that most of the characters were shells for the story. Only Snowman is real (he struggles with selfishness, with anger, etc...) but I wanted something more from Crake and, especially, Oryx. Themes: dystopia, genetic modification, overpopulation, environmentalism, violence, sex, technology, "perfection", destruction, language

When I went to buy some books to my local library, I found this of one of my favorite authors, Lisa Kleypas, and I said, "Wow, this one looks fantastic!" So I bought it. When I realize this book was the 3rd of the Travis series, I said: "What the hell" Jack Travis. I wish I could met you. He's my perfect man. I'm in love with him. I feel identify with Ella. It must have been difficult to be in her shoes. But she is a strong woman, independent, but with a heart so shattered, waiting for someone to melt the ice that she place in there. She's wonderful. Jack and Ella made one dreamy couple. This book is great. Lisa will never, ever dissapoint me with one of her books! Now, I'm going to read the first of the series. lol

It's a beautifully written book. I often find myself admiring the way O'Brien used language and the way he organized the stories (or not) when reading. I'm not sure why I didn't enjoy this book as much as others did; maybe I simply cannot truly enjoy war stories, even though for the most part the stories were definitely not about the gruesome, bloody aspects of war. (Maybe it's just a little too depressed for me.)
