Definitely the trashiest novel I have read in quite some time (and after reading Breaking Dawn, that's saying something). The author really wanted me to believe that our three main protagonists all experienced some sort of life-altering transformation by the end of the book, and I wasn't convinced that they had. The British Colloquialisms were fun and the writing wasn't half-bad, it just didn't really go anywhere.

The book was due at the library before I could finish it but I thought it was very inspiring. Perhaps I will have a happiness project if my own. . .
Alison Weir is an honest historian, and noted at the outset that very few contemporary documents surrounding Eleanor's life exist. To this end, much of the book, and much of this queen's story, is more a story of what can be surmised by what we know of those around her - and the book is as much the story of her husbands and sons and the crusades as it is about her. That said, there remains no question that Eleanor, even as much as she went unremarked upon, is remarkable, and I enjoyed this book a great deal - esp. inasmuch as most of the non-fiction and biographies I've read have been Tudor-era rather than late middle ages. To some degree, as this book followed Mistress of the Art of Death, which takes place in the same time frame (1170), I wish I'd read it first as I have a great deal more appreciation and understanding of what went on there. It's also re-awoken my desire to learn more about the Crusades as well as the Robin Hood (though that likely took place a few centuries later) and King Arthur legends (as I was surprised to discover that Arthur's place of burial and Excaliber were reportedly discovered during this time). Very intriguing, thoroughly researched and referenced, and often willing to offer opposing viewpoints of contemporaries to allow the reader to draw their own conclusion.

A wonderful memoir of a hearing boy growing up in the 30's in a deaf family. He manages to communicate both the tremendous love for his father and the sense of overwhelming responsibility he felt to be his father's ear and interpreter to the hearing world. If you enjoy memoirs this is an excellent one. The author also has written children's books based on his childhood. I highly recommend it.

sensuous, but without much direction or urgency. a fun, utterly forgettable ode to the body.
LOVE this book. Made me sob like an idiot at the end, but very worth it. Please read!

A story spanning 57 years of a boy who befriends a monster in the woods sounds like a fantastic premise, and it pays off. Although the back cover would have you believe that this was more a novel of horror, it's actually more of a tragic social drama with many tense moments, and all the better for it. One might argue that the characters could have been further developed and the passing of time a little lengthier; but lacking this, the story moves in a briskly manner with a pace that never quite slows, making it hard for any keen reader (like myself) to find the right spot to resign for the day and continue the next.

Another great vampire book, and I was still reading Pike's so-called young adult books when I was also reading intricate adult novels. He knows how to hold the reader's attention, and there is always a feeling of mystery and intrigue in the background.
