Interesting Christological reflections on the gospels. Pope Benedict shows himself to be a insightful, engaging theologian to my layman's eye-- but one in dire need of a good editor. His paragraphs wander all over the place before getting back to the point in question, and it reads more like personal musings that a coherent narrative. He as much as says that this book was rushed to press. I'm thoroughly enjoying it.

I'm completely envious of Susanna Clarke; how dare she write a first novel this good? :) A stunning piece of work. If you like Dickens and Austen, as the back cover tells you, you will love this book. But even if you don't, if you're just open to magic, you will love this book. In fact, you will love this book unless you are a stone-hearted person who is completely dead inside. It's absolutely lovely and should be recommended reading to everyone.

Quite a "kick in the pants," as promised, this book inspired me to make a regular habit out of my sparse songwriting (I've since lapsed, but I'm working on it!) My main issue is that it sort of boldly plows over the idea that you may have a family to support, and quitting your job to follow your heart might crush your ability to do so. In the book, this is sort of offered as "par for the course," but I wish there was a bit about how to ease into doing what you love for a living. Maybe that's the point: you can't really do that.

The contemporary alpha male obviously comes from military or law enforcement career. Beside that, I was not quite sure what else was attractive (or not) about Max Daniels - the hero, not withstanding the instant attraction between him and the heroine, Ellie. He just develops this instant and overwhelming need to protect Ellie and as things happen, he is able to do just that. He comes from a foster family background ending up with 6 brothers. She comes with a lot of baggage: enduring life threatening encounters with a crazed hometown stalker, an ex-fiance who is now marrying her own sister, a prodigy brain and a career as a trauma surgeon. We see her cool and competent in several crises situations, where her skills as a trauma doctor come to the fore. Somehow, Ellie manages to face and neutralize the scary stalker, with Max's help. Then she survives the encounter with a hit killer sent by the criminals she witnessed earlier in the action. Then she decides to be part of the difficult sister's (Ava) wedding, which is a huge step in her emotional relationship with Ava. I was not sure exactly what the point was for including the other sister's story in this novel. Annie is the one who went to law school and met a Navy Seal who "disappears" from her life while she finds herself pregnant. At the end of the story, a year later, he re-appears and there is a happy family reunion. Annie's role in the story is not all that clear except for the fact that she provides a needed shoulder as friend and confidante to Ellie during the few tense emotional days leading to Ava's wedding. Some fun characterization thrown in with the father, a math professor, who likes to buy things on sale and ends up with less than stellar choices, ha, ha...
