I didn't really care for any of the leads and it was so clearly a set up for Callus' story that I felt a little embarrassed for the author. It was like she took any chance she could find to talk about how wonderful and lonely and misunderstood he was. I GET it, but it was actually a romance with two other people. It felt so heavy handed. The story itself was only so-so. The second one in this series (Scoundrel) was much better. I had been looking forward to the last book but now I fear it will be annoyingly full of fangirl cooing over Callus. I think he's cool but it's not so fun to just read about his praises at the expense of everything else in the book.

E.B. White was a great writer. Anyone who reads his works will recognize how his prose often would take the most mundane- or fleeting-seeming moments and turn them into something charming and beautiful. White doesn't force his views on anybody; he uses subtlety to elevate his personal values while mildly mocking the flaws that he sees in human nature. The quality of this book along with its quests into aspects of human nature make this a timeless classic and a good read. However, please note: White's humor isn't for everyone. If you didn't find the "Peanuts" (comic strip) funny when you were younger, this is probably not a book you will enjoy.
I'm not sure what's scarier, Frankenstein's monster or having to slog through this book.
I liked the premise, but the plot was sluggish and way too much time was devoted to quantum physics. Not one of Card's best works.

This was an odd book to me. At times it was intriguing and even captivating, but it was very confusing to follow, as the story told of five generations of men, all named Langston Cane, and it didn't start with the oldest and go in chronological order, but rather jumped here and there and back and forth. It left me very often wondering which Langston Cane was currently being talked about. The book also included some very sexually explicit encounters and every mention of a baptist or episcopal minister (which was quite often) included him participating in something amoral, which I found rather vindictive, indicating to me some wrong suffered by the author in his life. The book also dealt with the issue of slavery and discrimination in North America, particularly against lighter skinned blacks from both whites and blacks, which was an interesting viewpoint.
Novel ini dimulai dengan kalimat "All happy families are resemble one to another but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way", yang kemudian dipakai pembuat serial Desperate Housewifes untuk mengawali drama itu. Panjang sekali soalnya, baca sendiri saja yaa... :D

Great book. Loads of compelling information that confirms what we basically assumed all along...human evolution and development is shaped by environmental factors. But he puts it out there clearly, though sometimes overly scientifically and he can get repetitive at times.
