This is a beautiful book and if you don't love it, you're probably mean and hate the Earth.

this was a quick read, but most definitely a thought-provoking one. The writing style of McCarthy almost entirely separates it from any written "rules" of writing. The solemn tone shines through with the dialogue between father and son. This book was heartbreaking but ended appropriately. "great read"
This is the story of Poppy, a female mouse. Poppy lives happily in Dimwood Forest. She lives with her husband, Rye, a golden mouse, and all her delightful children. Well, every child, except her rudest, Ragweed Jr. Ragweed was named after Rye's brother, the first Ragweed. Ragweed Jr. is a "teenager" and is very snotty. His best friend is a skunk! Poppy is very happy in Dimwood Forest, except for one day, when her sister comes to Dimwood Forest to tell Poppy some very bad news: Their father, Lungwart, is dying. This means that Poppy has to go to The Gray House to visit her father. Poppy can't go alone, so she brings Ragweed Jr. The problem is, Junior will only go, if she will let him bring his best friend, the skunk. Well, Poppy said yes. After traveling for a day or two, they finally reach Gray House. Everyone is happy to see Poppy. Then, Poppy learns something: Her father wants to make her the leader of Gray House! Will Poppy take his offer? Read to find out!

As soon as I saw the title, I knew I had to have it. I pre-ordered it months ago, and had forgotten about it until I got an email letting me know my book was here. Excitedly, I sat down to read it, swearing that it was just a short-term thing, because short-stories are not meant to be devoured in one sitting. Except that's totally what happened. I really liked most of them, a few were better than others. It starts strong, with quite a few which are clearly set in Tortall or neighboring lands which we've visited. Others are merely related, without it being overt. I wanted to know a *lot* more about the characters in Elder Brother; I feel like their story could have been a novel, or at least a novella, and I was disappointed by the page count. Nawat was difficult for me to read, because a lot of it was internalized, and it was definitely character driven rather than plot driven. I prefer the plot-heavy books of Pierce's early works; there were no enemies to battle, really. The Dragon's Tale was frustrating because Kitten was frustrated, so it worked well to help you empathize with the character and her situation. I actually disliked Huntress and Testing, in part because I felt they could have been better with a little more work, and in part because they were related, but didn't quite suit the volume. When all is said and done, I have to say that I really, really liked this book though. I'm glad to see Tamora Pierce writing short stories; she's done it well, and I'd love to see her put out more anthologies.

More a 3.5, another one where the end kind of ruined it for me. It ended up going no where, after 450 pages. Smith, however, is once again insightful, perceptive, and supremely aware of social and cultural nuance. Now to read Howard's End.

Through freelance proofreading, I come across all sorts of titles I might never consider reading on my own. This is one of them, which was mentioned in a book of essays on the films of Stanley Kubrick. Am a little afraid . . .

Boo. I can't believe how many good ratings this one got. The author is completely narrow-minded and judgmental about any alternatives to his own opinions. I plan to go against many of his recommendations, as I tend to think about my options rather than have them prescribed for me. If I could give this book negative stars, I would.
