A good, strong female lead in this book. I picked this up on sale not expecting anything and I was drawn right in. This book has some intrigue, some magic, and some romance. If you're looking for a book to get lost in, this one fits the bill.

I had to read this book for a class I took during my first year of college. I didn't expect to like it at first, but then I began to read and couldn't put the book down. The author spent years living among the subjects of this book and gathering research for it and it shows. The book is detailed, comprehensive, and manages to bring the reader as close to the reality of the characters' lives as possible. It is heart-wrenching, and it manages to raise some great and interesting questions about our country's economy and policies. I finished this book with a new perspective on class in America, and an interest to learn more.

My daughters highly recommended this book to me & I can see why. Very interesting tale. You're left guessing till the end. Had the privilege of hearing the author in person.
Very entertaining! You can't go wrong with bunnies! :)

Even-handed, honest, silly, thought-provoking and intriguing.
Beautifully written, emotionally wrenching, and exciting from start to finish. One of the best books I've read in the last year--or any year. It strips the world of all that is comforting, pleasant, and nourishing and asks: where, then, will goodness come from, if at all?

One day, a few years ago, my mother casually remarked to me that she had always hated Pollyanna because of her continual, insufferable optimism. I have not been able to read it since. Actually, I probably could re-read it now and be absolutely fine. But for now I am content to just remember how much I loved it. (And I got a valuable lesson out of the whole thing: the things you say DO affect those who look up to you. A lot.)
I stayed up late to finish reading this book. (These days not that many books make me do that since good sleep is a requirement for me!) The setting of the story is the early 60's in the south and includes the injustice and racial tensions that escalate during the Civil Rights Movement. The authors' feminist slant is woven throughout and there are some strange, religious elements that the characters draw upon for strength. The most important part of the story for me was the way the author illustrated the healing that comes from a loving environment and from the relationships formed between strong, independent women, both black and white. It's an easy comparison to see the parallel to the honey formed by a colony of bees, primarily female, working together. All in all, I really liked this book!
