This is a lengthy book about the legendary racehorse, Seabiscuit. I enjoyed the history of racing, the information about the owners and jockeys, and just how amazing this horse was. I didn't love how it ended fairly abruptly. With all the detail that went into the back history, I would have liked more information about what happened to the characters later in life.
I thought this was a very good crime/mystery novel, and this is not the genre I usually enjoy. I was actually hooked by the end of the first couple of chapters. I do have a couple of criticisms. I thought the whole side story of Salander and Advokat N. E. Bjurman was not necessary and the Bjurman character did not ring true. The second criticism, all the product placement. I might have been especially sensitive to this because this is the second recent book I have read with this. It really is annoying to be reading avidly and suddenly encounter the literary equivalent of “now for a brief message from one of our sponsors.” I know that product placement has long been a trend that will not be reversed in film and television, but now in books? No, this must not stand! Available as ebook.

The original--and sadly, probably the best--wholesale rip-off of Lord of the Rings, this is Terry Brooks' first novel. That, taken together with its near-plagiarism, was enough to keep me from giving this book a chance past its first chapter for several years. When I finally overcame my reservations, I found myself rewarded with a study in mediocrity. That'll teach me to take chances. Overall, this is an enjoyable book, and the story--though terribly written--is fairly well told. And if Allanon the Druid should seem to you very much like a certain Grey Pilgrim . . . well, who's to say Tolkien and Brooks didn't just independently come up with nearly the exact same character, mannerisms, and turn of phrase used to describe them some 40 years apart? Don't even get me started about the Ringwraith/Skull-Bearer issue.

This should be a 2.5, because the writing itself (outside of plot) is delicious, and the ideas are rich, and Gaiman's mind has such an amazing amalgamation of ideas that you have plenty to think about whenever you read his work. However, his amazing amalgamation also leads to random plot tangents that never seem to link back up. I felt like when he wrote certain chapters he was on a bad acid trip. The second chapter, which is also incredibly graphic, doesn't really link to anything in the rest of the story! The way he wraps up the plot at the end feels really contrived, and while the world is vivid and rich and supposed to be quite whacked out, it doesn't need to bleed over that much into plot. I felt like the main character actually became more flat as the book went along to the point of disappearing up until the last 10 pages or so. Some great ideas, but the delivery falls flat (or explodes in a confusing and variegated mess).

I'm not very fond of short stories. It takes me time to get into a story and if it is too short, it is over before I get really engaged. I like the rumpole books but this one contains too many short stories. I think there are 8 or 9 in this very short collection. They are fun but a little too short for my taste.
