I loved Brooks storytelling technique. She told just enough that you really wanted more of each chapter. This was a refreshing change for me

So much you miss in just one read through. Loved it. Will read again.

This may be the worst book I have ever read that didn't have the words "Danielle Steele" somewhere on the cover . ..until you hit the description of Nero's burning of Rome. For about 30 pages it is terrific, and then reverts back to some of the worst prose and suppressed erotic perversity I have ever laid eyes upon. Those nutty early Christians spend a LOT of time looking at golden-haired maidens in diaphanous gowns, and there is a moment where Petronius has his slave Eunice whipped instead of dosing her with saltpeter that is just . . .wow.

I first read this in college and then had the privilege of teaching it last year to my seniors. It takes the reader on a dream like journey of self-discovery. Much to my horror and delight, I overheard one of my students say, “Dude, this is the first chapter book I’ve read. It’s pretty cool.”

I liked the idea and the art. The story could have used some fleshing out.
The author just loves to put in crucial information in the stupidest fashion ever. And this would be fine if the book weren't in FIRST PERSON. Seriously, how can you just forget something like that?! Either she has extreme short term memory loss or she's retarded. Really. Ugh.

Compelling translation situating text in reconstructed historical context. Chapters reorganized thematically, partially subjected to some textual archaeology. Interesting work separating Laoism-political philosophy/self-cultivation from Daoism-religion/cosmology. Good starter text.

An late 1800's/early 1900's version of Romeo & Juliet with witty dialogue between the characters and the author merges both East & West hope and sensibilities and debate that still exists to this day.

Fun book on how a girl moved to Idaho to take up homesteading; raising chickens, angora bunnies, bees, garden, knitting, and making homemade bread. Stuff I like.
