Mike Mignola's pencils at the back of the book is amazing. His ability to spot blacks really adds to the mood of the story. Go and read it.

This interesting book examines the interconnection between the various scientific advances of the 17th century and manages to make such luminaries as Robert Hooke, Christopher Wren, and Gian Domenico Cassini into real men rather than the passionless scientific demigods they are sometimes portrayed as having been. For the most part I found this book to be quite engaging though my interest waned a little while reading the book’s last few chapters. Overall, however, Ingenious Pursuits was a worthy read.

Picoult always pulls the rug out from under her characters at the end of the story. This one was different...
"A Confession" is Tolstoy's engrossing spiritual autobiography. By midlife he had come to believe (having read Schopenhauer, among others) that life was utterly meaningless and the only logical response was suicide. He began to wonder how so many millions of people could continue to live - so he examined the lives of the Russian working class around him. He found in them a compelling religious faith, which, in time, he adopted (although he eventually left Russian Orthodoxy, partly because he couldn't believe some of its teachings and partly because of its sectarianism). Tolstoy had come to believe that God is that which makes life and living possible. "'Live in search of God and there will be no life without God!' And more powerfully than ever before everything within and around me came to light, and the light has not deserted me since."
The Grand Complication by Allen Kurzweil was a mixed bag. Alexander Short is a librarian working at a large public library in New York City. One day, while working at the reference desk, he is approached by a man who wants “to steal a moment of his time” and requests a book about secret compartments in old furniture, a topic Alexander is furiously interested in. The two, Short and the patron, Henry Jesson, embark on a quest to find a lost watch to complete Jesson’s collection. The journey is interesting, but neither Jesson nor Short is particularly likeable (the best character is actually the library janitor, who has an incredible knowledge of Dewey class numbers) which made me very sad. I really wanted to like Short the librarian. The story itself also ends abruptly and not completely satisfactorily, either, and while there is a possibility for the characters to return in another book, I think it highly unlikely that they will. I found the book to be a maddening mix of disdain for modern living (including some modern library practices) and appreciation for old-timey stuff.

I have rarely come across a book that is both ridiculously hilarious and incredibly heartbreaking, sometimes in the same sentences. I love Charlie. But who wouldn't? He is like my imaginary adopted little brother.

This poor book has had some interesting translations which gives it a slight disadvantage to the Book of Mormon, but the Spirit can still be felt while reading this amazing book.
Too bad that it looks like the author is British as I'd love to see this nominated for a 2013 CCBA. Very cute story and illustrations that could serve as a writing lesson with older students to have them write want ads or skills lists. I loved just about everything about this one, from the language humor to the layout and font selection. Jacket says this is the author's first book pulished in the United States. Hopefully it will be far from her LAST!

I loved this book! Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love sums it up better than I can... "I can't remember the last time I discovered a novel as smart and delightful as this one, a world so vivid that I kept forgetting this was a work of fiction..." It it is in letter format, so that took some getting used to but once I got beyond that, I loved the book. My favorite series of all time is "Anne of Green Gables" and this book reminded me of "Anne of Windy Poplars" (#4 in the series.) It's kind-of an "Anne" book for grown-ups, little amusing stories about the people that surround the main character.

When people go into this book thinking it is one of the most amazing all time romance novels, they would be sorely disappointed. All the teen magazines are saying that this is the book of the decade and so on, but this is not true. However, if u enter the book thinking it is a trashy novel that is over-rated, it is a rather well written book. I really like this book and read all the twilight books constantly, and it is the only book that i can actually have a conversation with someone my age!
