A favorite of mine. A sad, beautiful study of misunderstanding, youth, and family relationships. No loose ends, and no static characters. I empathized with both sisters, which is rare.

A pretty good historical fiction about New York in the late 1930's. There were a couple parts in the middle where a group of characters did a lot of swearing and since I was listening to it on audio it was even more jarring. I could have done without that whole part, it didn't even seem to play that big of part in the book. Now I just wish I could know what happened in Tinker's life.

This book is a delightful romp in post-war Paris. I have lived all over the US and I had taken it for granted that I could find great restaurants everywhere. But it wasn't that long ago that you couldn't find interesting and intricate cuisine here. We owe a lot to Julia Child's influence.

This book will make you want to go to Paris, sit in a cafe and smoke cigarettes while discussing the meaning of life with the luminaries of your generation. I really liked the book for the feeling and atmosphere it evoked and thought the perspective of Hemingway's wife was interesting. (It did confirm my previous notion that I would not want to be married to him.)

more like a 3 1/2, but i rounded up. i like this one a lot better than the alchemist - probably because i tend to enjoy books about being nearly good or almost evil. and the devil incarnate (in the not-spooky way) is always facinating to me - think master & margarita, except not as inticate or creative. Coehlo's a good storyteller but tends writes like a more like a psychologist.

Just exactly as much fun as i hoped it would be. Sure, the masterpiece zombie novel is occasionally dragged down by the cheesy romance novel its shackled to, but, overall, it's a fun, engaging, frequently hilarious read.
