In my opinion, the perfect end to the Potter series.

Field Gray is about the experiences of a Berlin police detective, Bernie Gunther, who becomes entangled in a web of espionage and deceit after being captured by the Red Army in 1945, serving hard time in a Russian POW camp, deflecting back to Germany, escaping to Cuba, being captured by the CIA, and finally being forced to serve for French Intelligence, which ultimately lands him back to his original starting point in Berlin in 1954. Sound interesting? Absolutely! And I felt this novel had such tremendous potential at the start, with Gunther hiding out in an exotic location (Havana) and being blackmailed into taking a mysterious woman (an undercover assassin!) on a boat to Haiti. But quite literally, the action ends there. And that is page 19. The next 300+ pages has Gunther in the hands of one set of interrogators or another, as he is captured before reaching Haiti. So the reader learns his backstory from 1931 through to the present (which is 1954) as he answers questions from whichever holding cell he happens to be in at the time. Therefore, most of the novel is a frame story in that sense. But the problem is, Gunther is just a leaf blowing in the wind. He makes no decisions regarding his own fate, and relates to his past experiences in such a way that there is very little room for the reader to feel emotionally connected to the character or his experiences. At one point, I just stopped caring what happens to him anymore. The last 50 pages finally becomes interesting again as Gunther gets himself involved in a plot to help the French capture a wanted traitor while simultaneously tricking them into helping the Americans capture their wanted criminal—a ruthless Stasi communist who regularly appears throughout Gunther’s backstory (and actually existed in real life). For the first time in the novel, Gunther finally does something. But to get there, you have to suffer through the rest, and that includes the introduction of countless names (I counted over 60 names in the first 100 pages), ninety percent of which have absolutely nothing to do with the course of the novel’s events. It just makes one feel disconnected to Gunther and his plight. The good thing about this novel is that the author is actually an excellent writer. Lots of sharp humor, lots of wit. Gunther is a wise-cracking gem, and his retorts often evoke an internal giggle. It is also an historical novel in the sense that Gunther’s story takes place amidst events which seem to be depicted pretty accurately, from the rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party through to the end of the War and the Nuremberg Trials. That is definitely interesting. But I think this is also supposed to be a spy thriller. Only, where is the thrill?

** spoiler alert ** I couldn't put this book down it was very easy to be drawn into the book and I liked that. This was also my first trip into the romance genre and it was a good book to be introduced too. There was a solid plot too. The constant complaining of Ruth's age and Garrick's one ball got a bit annoying as it became more constant but I can understand in that type of nature and with Ruth's job why her age would be of concern. I loved the physical details of the electricity running through each of them as they got closer and the constant of their eyes as well. The murder plot with them trying to frame Garrick was really rushed. But I can see how through out the novel, after I was done reading it, that there was a lot of stuff dealing with it through out the book. But I think more of it through the book would've been better. I had just happened to look at the back of the book when in school and was surprised to see "and he's being framed for murder" which didn't come in until the last 50 or so pages. I was happy with the resolution of the book and how they were able to get their happy ending and Ruth was able to conceive. Which I don't see why she wouldn't, she just kept saying she was too old not that her cycle was missing. But I'm being to critical, I highly enjoyed this book and might delve into romance more often.

Once again a fantastic book! Ocean voyage, dragons, magicians, and retired stars ... what more could you ask for in a children's fantasy? Delightfully entertaining, easy and light reading, and a subtle story of some of life's lessons.

a great story, and a wonderful choice to read aloud. we were planning to do a chapter a night but we enjoyed it so much that we sometimes read 2 or 3. it is a wonderful adventure, but a bit too violent for little kids so i imagine we'll have to wait a number of years to read it to the baby again. probably after narnia and harry potter, because the violence outstrips those significantly.

Liar’s Kiss is everything you could want from a graphic novel noir. It is classic, edgy, and is filled with intrigue. I took a chance on it because I love graphic novels and I figure that even if it is bad, at least I can be amused by the illustrations. I wasn’t let down AT ALL by this novel. From the first page, I was hooked. The plot is like that of any film noir. A private investigator, Nick, is having an affair with his client’s wife Abbey. One night, Nick gets a call from Abbey saying that her husband has been killed...and she’s the main suspect! She hires Nick to find her an alibi that will not place her at the scene of the crime. This assignment gets Nick into a bit more trouble than he had bargained for. Consequently, he finds himself facing demons from his past and putting his fate in another’s hands. I thought this was superb. It is written in the traditional black and white “comic book” style. Where it could come off as being cliche, it actually sets the perfect tone and atmosphere for the story. When reading the book, you feel as if you’re watching an old fashioned noir. Including, the classic noir twist. If I had to voice any complaints, it would be that the story is a little thin and the dialog is a bit stilted. Yet, I can’t really get update about it because most noir is thin on the plot and big on the intrigue. Still, as a first book I think he did a great job. I look forward to his future works. www.iamliteraryaddicted.blogspot.com
AWESOME christian, historical fiction book. This book was different than alot of the other christian fiction books I've read. It was more historically acturate and I felt like I learned quite a bit abou life back in Biblical times. The setting was Rome and Ephesus, not long after Jesus died. I can't wait to read the next book in series. I already ordered it from the library!

I really liked this book. It was the sequel to another, and I liked this one way better. The kids in it were 7th graders, like us, and they seemed a lot more mature than they did in the first book in this series. I think it was really good and more interesting than the first one. I can relate to it and I thought it was really true. I gave it 4 stars.
Kind of like watching an episode of 24. Very unrealistic, but I usually enjoy his books once a year or so.
