Re-read of another edition 29/5/16: When was the last time I read the appendices? I'm pretty sure I didn't last time and that's a shame. My feelings on them are similar to those I have for The Silmarillion - they're easily dismissed as an unnecessary list of kings and genealogies but for fans of J.R.R. Tolkien's ambition it's a treasure trove of information about the Dwarves, Rohan and others. And that's just it - I love the story, I've grown up with it and perhaps because of grown up with it (and in light of Peter Jackson's films) I think it's easy to miss the point of Tolkien. The essence of Tolkien's work is in these appendices. Imitators who look to the epic quest are like cooks who think a leathery steak can be transformed into a delicacy by drizzling it in truffle oil after they eat out at an expensive restaurant. The oil's the garnish, the dazzling finish to the creation that made it memorable but without the care, skill and attention paid to the other parts it would be best forgotten. Although I don't agree, I can understand criticisms of Tolkien's writing but I can't imagine how anyone couldn't admire his ambition. He created a whole world of myth, sagas and legend. The Lord of the Rings is the epic in that pantheon and it gets the attention that that position demands - just as The Oddysey grabs a lot of attention in the Greek mythos. When I say I grew up with Tolkien's world, I mean just that - I'm more familiar with his mythos than with stories from the Bible, or Greek legends for example. I'm a believer.

(p. 249)"Max asks Liesel how the weather looks: 'The sky is blue today Max, and there is a big long cloud, it's stretched out like a rope. At the end of it, the sun is like a yellow hole'...Max, at that moment, knew that only a child could have given him a weather report like that. On the wall he painted...two figures--a thin girl and a withering Jew--It was a Monday, and they walked on a tightrope to the sun."

Good book. Quick read. Not completely accurate, but mentally engaging. Simple message: TV rots your brain. I like Bradbury, and this is a classic. 'Nuff said.

VERY QUICK READ. Accomplishes what it aims for, but certainly not the best of its kind or subject.

This was an easy fun read. Nothing spectular though.

it paints the picture so well that it seems cliche... very dated - very campy - you can see why it's a cult classic -- odd because it was written by someone who really got an inside perspective but seems caricature-ish.

very entertaining if a couple of the personalities are somewhat annoying. i had a hard time identifying with some of the characters who were a little over-the-top, almost like a caricature. Having said that, I also had a hard time putting the book down, reading it cover to cover in about three days. I'm not sure if I had known in advance how low-brow it was if I would have read it but I'm glad I did. It paints a very real and heartbreaking picture of dementia that has given me a new empathy for people who suffer from it.

Amazingly funny. I got this book at a book swap when I was in Middle school. It was written in the 1930's probably and is a collection of short stories written by the author about growing up with her sister. Very clever and well written, I can't count how many times I have read it, but I still laugh out loud every time I read it.

Didn't like this at all. Very self-absorbed, narcissistic (maybe I'm judgmental?). Meh.
This one is my fourth favorite Austen. Fannie is a little uptight, but so sincere. Great contrast between Fannie and Edward and the sibling neighbors.
