When I was younger, probably about seven or eight years old, my cousins and I would climb trees in our grandparents’ yard. One particular tree had enough large, sturdy branches that we could all fit in it at once, making it perfect for playing Monchichis. One afternoon, we had finished playing Monchichis and we were all climbing out of the tree. I decided it would be an excellent idea to jump out of the tree, which is something I’d done many times before. This time, I jumped from the tree and stopped halfway to the ground. My jacket hood had been hooked on a short branch and I was stuck. My cousins ran into the house to get the adults because this was the 80s and parents actually let their children have fun without watching them every second of the day. The adults all ran outside to see me hanging from the tree by my jacket. There was much laughing and taking of pictures before anyone attempted to help me out of the tree. I can relate to David Sedaris’ writing. Me Talk Pretty One Day was published in 2000 and contains essays dealing with everything from Sedaris learning French, his siblings and their quirks, to my favorite essay in the book: “Big Boy”. “Big Boy” is an essay about finding a giant turd, sans toilet paper accompaniment, in the toilet while attempting to use the bathroom at an Easter gathering. The panic that overcomes Sedaris and the different directions of his mind in this situation had me wincing in recognition and laughing at the story at the same time. Sedaris has a way of writing his experiences so that they seem universal when I’ve never actually snorted meth amphetamines or been a gay man. The way that he chooses his pacing, his words, and overall tones in his essays speaks volumes about the talent and genius of the man. Another favorite essay is "The Youth in Asia". It starts as a remembrance of past pets in the Sedaris family and the strange attachments formed between animal and human. Then it ends on a decidedly down and somber note, in a turn that, while not especially out of nowhere, still takes you by surprise. I will be reading at least one more Sedaris book during this Cannonball Read and have read two of his books previously. I look forward to seeing more experiences through the eyes of Sedaris.

I had previously made a pact to NOT read anymore of Jodi Piccoult's books because, with the exception of one or two, they were all extremely far-reaching and predictable. However, this book caught my attention by the premise of the story...a teenager with Asperger's syndrome with an obsession for forensic science who becomes involved in a murder trial...The author did a great job of making the main character, Jacob and his Asperger's characteristics realistic and believable. He was also an extremely likable character. It was a great story about someone with "differences". The technique of having each character narrate their own sections of the book offered many enlightening, very human perspectives on dealing with or interacting with asomeone with social challenges. It definitely gave the reader a lot to think about and to empathize with each of the characters.

this is one of my favorite books, which i suppose is a bit weird, because i didn't love every essay. some work really really well, and others are just sort of a total mess of klosterman getting lost in his own head/theories. but the ones i love i love SO much that it's still one of my favorite books. i think, also, that this book impacted me because i found myself going, wow--people can write nonfiction like this, and it's sort of ridiculous but also really works...and is engaging and interesting. this definitely isn't for everyone--a lot of people find him pretentious and annoying (which, although i disagree, i can understand). i was nervous that i would, too, once i saw him speak, but after a panel at the brooklyn book festival, i love him even more. he's just a total nerd dressed like a hipster.

Cute book that's a perfect board book style. Musical simple rhymes on one side of the 2-page spread, cartoonish, but cute pictures of multicultural babies on the other. Some board books try to condense longer books, or contain too many words of text, or have pictures that are too complicated for this smaller format. This book falls into none of those traps. Good book for a young baby!

I finished this book a few weeks ago and think it's one of the best things I've ever read. I know it's a cliche to say "I couldn't put it down" but this is one of those rare cases when it absolutely applies. I think I read this in four nights time. It came highly recommended but at first I was reluctant, because I wrongly assumed it was too political, all about war. It's not at all. It's a coming of age story, I guess I'd say, that occurs before and during wartime...Interesting insights into life in Afghanistan, then and now...and then follows the characters through to adulthood. But it's definitely about people first and foremost, it's a character-driven story. I love the author's style of writing. He has an almost poetic command of language. It's not pompous but not too simple and literal either. I felt every emotion his characters felt during the course of my read. There are many sad moments, and many suspenseful, "action-packed" moments, hahaha. Wouldn't want to give an ounce of the drama away, it must be read to be believed! So far this is his only novel but I'll be watching for a second one...
