Beautifully written. This is three novellas that take place in different eras (past, present, future) with characters who have the same names but aren't related to the forebear. That made it difficult for me, as I "do" novels for the story - each story ended and you wanted more....

Loved the way the books is written.
This book was informative and not-too-dry for a history. I enjoyed it! The Stuarts were pretty fascinating people.

This book started off so slowly I was getting bored just waiting for the baby to be born. The characters were just stereotypes with no real depth and while the book is full of good ideas and themes, it just skipped along happily to its fairy tale ending with no repercussions. I didn't even mind the story lines that were left hanging because I really just didn't care. The book didn't draw me in.

So the whole Aenea as Christ thing was a bit much. And the "romance" between her and Raul so pale and uninteresting that it did nothing to make me want to reach the end of the over 700 pages of tiresome, unedited detail. And there really was no reason for the sex scene in which Raul eats out Aenea. Was there? This much anticipated closing volume of the Hyperion cycle is enjoyable as a tale, but could have been hundreds of pages shorter. I love big, meaty reads, I admit, but shouldn't you want to get to the end of a story you've been following through the course of 4 novels? I didn't. I almost stopped reading it just because I didn't want to have to carry it with me around Europe anymore. But I stuck with it and finished it on the plane to Paris from Madrid. I hope whoever found it in the seat pocket just happens to want to read it. It's an effort.

I love getting books from GoodReads contests. I find author's I might never have looked at before. Quite a bit of humor follows the adventures of Radar, Allie & Mirplo (a group of grifters who came together in the author's first book, The California Roll). Even though I had a pretty good idea what was really going on, there were more than enough twists and turns to keep my head spinning. I would recommend reading the first book to get to know the characters first. There's not a lot of back story in this book on the characters, just quick references to the first book. I think they were likely fleshed out there. I plan to go back and read The California Roll and I look forward to the next book.

Again, I am left shaking my head at the critical success of a dud. Just Kids is just dull writing made worse by Smith's flat narration on the audiobook.

If you like reading cookbooks, you'll love this book. It has more background and stories for each recipe than almost any cookbook I've seen (the exception being Cook's Illustrated, but this is entirely different). I haven't tried any recipes yet, but the book itself is engaging.

Capote invented documentary fiction, and nobody has done it better. This book is unbearable; it bludgeons you with events you don't want to be true.
