I didn't really like this book. It was so stark, so bleak. I know it's good, but it didn't ever draw me in.

ooh, evil priests are always fun! saw the ending a mile away, and i'm not the kind of thriller reader who TRIES to figure out who did it. too obvious and not nearly tight enough. a fun read, but only sorta.
When I started this book it just seemed like a run of the mill kidnapping story where the overprotective parents turn their back for one second and the kid goes missing. As we get further into the story, the main characters back-stories begin to be peeled back layer by layer. David has an ex-wife who may or may not be responsible for their own sons death and Kyra has an estranged sister who wants to punish her for something we don't learn about until the last few chapters. It's not until the back-stories come into play that the story really pulled me in. These characters are tragic and seem just relentlessly unhappy all the time which made them had to connect to. I have down days but I'm generally a happy person, David and Kyra are not. So while I found the story to be interesting, I wasn't completely engrossed in it nor was I really invested in these characters lives. I've been very busy in real life as I read this so my distraction may have contributed to my lack of investment.

I received this book from the Junior Literary Guild. Having loved their selections in the past I decided to read it. Although the story read really fast, I felt there was way too much going on. It was a "mash-up" of MANY fairy tales. It never fully developed one good story just jumped from tale to tale. This kept the characters very flat and undeveloped. I didn't get a chance to really feel any emotions for any of the characters.

The Hunger Games was well-written, and I am familiar with "The Lottery" (There are no new plots--just ways of presenting them). However, the subject matter is extremely depressing. I strongly advised my 11 year old grandaughter not to read it. I would advise parents to have their children wait until age 16 to read it. I see no reason for young children to be introduced to such gruesome and depressing ideas. I am a former 9th grade English Teacher.

it's nothing like the movie. p.d. james writes humanity beautifully. while the movie built momentum and carried through with it, the book kind of fizzled with a lot of spiritual/religious goosehfudge.

Again, not as funny as Lucky Jim (my gold standard of funniness), but pretty darn funny.

Difficult to read because of the graphic violence, this book leaves you saddened by the brutality of war yet optimistic about the redemptive capacity of the human spirit.

This is the book for people who love adventure. Wen an event happens in a book, you can usually predict it but in this book it surprises you. I reccomend this book to everyone because when i started I wasn't able to stop! :)
