This book is about A young man who recently lost his younger brother to gang violence. He then moves to a new neighborhood where it seems to him as if it were an entirely different world. He learns to cope with the fact that his brother is gone and that revenge is not always the answer. I recommend this book to young readers because I believe this book would be very intrueging to them.

This book is a beautiul tribute to the great city of Chicago. In discussing Chicago, Algren touches on what makes other American cities unique (through the act of comparison). This buttery epci poem/prose taps into the often undescribable nuances of American urban identity.

I almost stopped reading this one because of the neverending categorization of dated possessions (1982) into the American class (or caste, as he says) system...but then I realized how hilarious it all was. Fussell is smug and a total know-it-all, but also extremely spot on over and over again. I was laughing out loud at points and then extremely annoyed about our "American values" at others. If you can ignore the references to 80s fashion and unknown (to me) public figures, most of what he writes still feels true.

I like Deryni novels but it's been too long since I read the others. I need to reread them to remember all the details. I'm sure this one would tie in well.

It was John McCutcheon's DVD that led me to this bi-lingual book of poetry. There were some wonderful tributes to everyday items that escalated their importance in our lives to that of greatness. I wish that I knew Spanish well enough to be able to appreciate the book in its native tongue.
a good reference for understanding Modernism

Way more funny, interesting and readable than I would have predicted.
It was a little too simple for my tastes, as it read more like a novel for children BUT you would never want to have your child read this as it has a very adult nature to it. The characters weren't that in depth and I found myself speed-reading through sections just to get through it. What is odd is that the author said it was a novel that started out about the relationship between a boy and his grandmother - that did not come through in the story, sadly. What I did like is her descriptions of the surroundings in which the boy dug into in search of his murdered Uncle. That was beautiful - I just wish that could have been translated into the characters as well. I was at the airport when I came across this book and simply read the back cover and was really intrigued with the plot. I noted the title/author and requested it from my library to read when I returned home, which I'm thankful that I borrowed this book and not purchased it.
