Similar to all of the books I've read by Jodi Picoult, which is an excellent light read. She always comes up with interesting plot lines/characters. This one is kind of medical/ethical.

Yang's American Born Chinese was the recipient of this year's Printz Award - the first graphic novel to be presented with this honor. The book is divided into three stories that are interwoven: The first centers around Jin Wang, a Chinese-American who desires to be the same as everyone else. This is difficult for him as one of two Asian people in the third grade. The book chronicles his experiences in grade school into high school, complete with bullying from the in-crowd, and a major lack of friends. One day, he falls for a girl...unfortunately, she is all-American. Does Jin Wang have a shot with her? The second story is the legend of the Monkey King, who is not satisfied with being the most powerful monkey in the world. There is an incident at a dinner party which leads to his self-hatred - he no longer wants to be a monkey, and attempts to be greater than a god... The third story focuses on all of the negative stereotypes Americans have about Chinese people. Chin-Kee is the charicature of all of these, from the buck teeth and yellow skin, to the thick accent, to the fortune cookie-like sayings. Unfortunately, Chin-Kee, Danny's cousin, comes to visit him every year at his school. Danny, one of the popular high school kids, finds himself transferring from high school to high school shortly after these visits. How can he save his reputation? I liked how the stories were brought together in the end, and thought that Yang did a wonderful job conveying his points. This was a quick read with great artwork, and a monkey reminiscient of the "Evil Monkey" from the Family Guy series. Except this one does not reside in Chris's closet...
Not toally believable because the little boy's dad was a minister. Still captivating.

April’s book club selection, not a book I would have picked and I almost did not read it. That said, I enjoyed this book and a few times even laughed out loud. The book is about various areas of sexual research. I really enjoyed Mary Roach’s writing; a couple of my favorite passages follow. Apparently at one time, in the 1970’s, many penises were cut off by vengeful wives in Thailand. So much so that reattachment surgery was “perfected.” Roach writes, “When a suitably equipped microsurgeon was on hand to reattach the errant appendage, the men were able to resume philandering within a matter of months.” “Women who came to him for contraceptive advice were told to wear a piece of cat liver in an ivory tube attached to their left foot. Though I suppose this might well keep you from getting pregnant, in the same way that wearing Birkenstocks might.” “If it’s any solace, even female rats have trouble focusing. I give you a sentence, my favorite sentence in the entire oeuvre of Alfred Kinsey, from Sexual Behavior in the Human Female: “Cheese crumbs spread in front of a copulating pair of rats may distract the female, but not the male.”” About a female type Viagra drug’s side effects: “And a drug that can make a woman with “black dots on face” feel sexy is a drug to look into further.”

Another one of the books I turn to again and again. For me, this book speaks not only to hard work and self-sacrifice or living in a very tightly circumscribed world, but (most importantly)to knowing what you want for yourself.

It was really hard for me to rate this book. I really enjoyed How to Build a Robot Army and I really enjoyed Robopocalypse. the problem was that it's living in the shadow of another book. The entire time I was reading Robopocalypse I couldn't stop thinking about World War Z. They're both told in the same fashion with a main character/narrator and frame story and entries in an oral history style. The problem was that while Robopocalypse was interesting, well thought out and had good recurring characters it just wasn't as emotionally compelling as WWZ. WWZ consistently moved me. It scared me and amazed me and made me proud/ashamed of humanity. Robopocalypse almost never had that kind of impact on me. The only aspect that really struck a chord with me was the tone of hope that echoed through the entire book. That being said the book was very interesting and well written. It was compelling and unique. If anyone is qualified to talk about a robot uprising it's Daniel H. Wilson. For that reason I wish I has read Robopocalypse in a vacuum. It would have been a 4 or maybe a 4.5 but with WWZ so deeply ingrained in my imagination that just never happened.

This was really interesting and totally makes me want to recommit to exercise and consistent sleep. I liked his recommendation and bullet point summaries at the end of each chapter.
