One of my classmates had warned me at the beginning of this week, "Don't start reading this book at night and alone." Naturally, that evening while my roommate was out, I plopped down on the couch to start this book. I will spend hours upon hours watching Criminal Minds (which is my ABSOLUTE favorite), Law and Order: SVU, and crime documentaries. A few months ago, I got a DVD series from Netflix on serial killers. Nobody panic, I'm not crazy or sick, but I find these times of ghastly crimes more than interesting. It's so behind my imagination to dream up something so awful and yet, there are people who actually find pleasure in bringing legitimate pain to others. So naturally, the opening scene of this book had me riveted. I was disappointed in the lull after that scene that seemed to go on for about half the book, but overall, I thought the story, characters, and concepts were really interesting. I did a little research on the book and author and was pleased to confirm my suspicions that this was a British book (not that that has anything to do with if it's good, just that I'd enjoy it more). I also found an excerpt from an article that drew comparisons between this novel and Harry Potter. At this point I hadn't finished reading the book but especially when the reader comes to learn the backstory on the massacre of the Dorian family and who the Jacks are, I began to understand the similarities. That means it was not only a coming of age story, but it also included that fantasy element that seems to be becoming more common and popular in young adult novels. For my personal taste, I tend to have a love/hate relationship with such books, but The Graveyard Book was much more middle-of-the-road for me. Overall, I thought it was good, but it was the long periods of not a lot happening that really hindered me from being able to fall in love with this book. I found the link Dr. Witte especially helpful in bridging that gap though. Having the authors expression and enthusiasm in reading and the audience's feedback (mostly laughter) made some of those dryer chapters more enjoyable for me. This is definitely a book I would consider having students read, or at least read cuttings from. I think it includes enough of those controversies everyone loves (whether they admit it or not) and that fantastic element that students are growing increasingly fond of to really captivate young students. I'd be interested to get a student's feedback though since I feel like my opinion is partially biased because of the type of literature and entertainment I most enjoy.
