I got really into Amy Tan for a while. Esp when I was trying to relive the SF days. And I like that there's an element of mysticism in there. For some reason I love mysticism.

The title clearly gives away the fact that this isn't a feel good story. However, I love to read of the trials of humans and the spirit to survive that lives within us all. The book made me realize how vital missions and charities are to the survivalhood of many in the world, and makes me realize that perhaps America is really a solace for the war-torn refugees of the world, and we need to keep our borders open to them.

A classic in poker literature and a portrait of the World Series of Poker before it became the bloated, corporate shill game it has warped into. Not that I don't love it.
This is a good book because of the repetition. The children catch on quickly and enjoy reading it again and again.

The worst book in the series. I read only a hundred pages and had to quit. Too much expository writing on herbs and very little story.

Mostly history, but keeps the fun vein along with some action perfect for Kids about 10 and up.

Generally interesting book though not at all well edited. The story was inspiring and depressing at the same time. Most of those wonderful girls' schools that Greg Mortenson built have apparently been destroyed by the Taliban.

I keep this thing on the shelf by my pillow to pick up whenever I feel like getting a good dose of erudition. I don't think I'll ever get through all of these essays, I'll just pick one at random and read for a few pages. Montaigne tends to jump to three or four subjects within the course of one essay and ending up somewhere completely different than where he started, so it's not like you miss anything by opening it at random. Who knew that the father of the essay was such a rambling, non-linear thinker?

I'm on a B roll! Woo! Um. So, yeah... let's see what I can remember. This book is long and it doesn't have to be. It can be so much shorter. But it's very well written. Um... this is going to be a really crappy review, I'll just tell you now. I probably should have reviewed it the minute I got done with it. But I didn't, so a pox on me. Here's one thing that bugged me, but it gives away a lot so don't read it if you don't want to be spoiled... Ruth May. Seriously. Bugged the crap out of me, so I felt no saddness when she died. I think if it had been Adah, it would have been a lot more touching and a lot more heartbreaking. I felt not attachment to Ruth May, she was just a little annoying kid, so when she kicked the bucket I was like, "Oh, too bad. No more Ruth May. What ever shall we do now?" I really have nothing else to say. The book would have been a lot shorter and a lot better if the ending had been cut down... a lot. I think we could have seen the girls reunion, heard a basic summary of what they'd been up to, and still got the same point across. We didn't really need to follow their life stories after they leave the Congo. It wasn't as interesting as when they were actually in the Congo. I'm going to stop this review before it sucks any harder... ah ha ha ha! Besides the flaws I pointed out, the book is actually pretty good.
I absolutely loved this ending book in the Neanderthal trilogy. We continue to follow the story Ponter and Mary as they attempt to make a live for themselves in the now connected parallel earths. I loved the progression of the story as well as the ending. Very good trilogy!!
