I really wanted to give this book a higher rating. I thought the general story was very interesting and the world was rich and fully realized. I would love to read more in this world... as long as it didn't involve the main character or his love interest. Those two characters really ruined this book for me. I wanted to like them, but I found the main character to be a mixture of angsty teenager and pompous fool, and his love interest was a complete... well... tart. Books that are centered around "true love" stories tend to annoy me in general as they usually are just an excuse for a lot of angst and whining. This story seems to be no different. I also didn't much care for the story-narrative as it removed any sense of danger and it tended to bludgeon you with obvious fore-shadowing by telling you snippets of future doom and gloom. I will probably not pick up the sequels. I'd love to read more about this world, but not if it involves these characters.

It's nice to have a disinterested, agnostic, empiracist take the side of biology-based sexual difference. Very curious and worth reading if for no other reason than to see which assumption of your goldberg hits on.

i thought this book was only ok. not as funny as i had hoped and he seems to hero worship mario batalli too much. i like 'the man who ate everything more' even though it's just a compiliation of short articles. i feel that the writer gets really invovled with each topic he writes about and really does his research.
