After reading the book finally! I found that the recent "Knightly" movie was a very good compliment to Austen's story. There were several changes to locations and number of people in scenes but that seems necessary to keep the flow and length of the movie short. I have to say keeping up with the wording/structure was never really a problem I had reading her novels. I sometimes found during common banter or speeches though I would get lost on who was actually speaking. Have to re-read or wait till the end of the speech.

The first pages of Patricia Clothier's memoir takes the reader back to 1936 and the drive from Persimmon Gap to author's new childhood home on the Wilson Ranch, one mile below "The Window." This is a child's view of growing up on land that would ultimately become part of the Big Bend National Park. In Oak Canyon, her family endured hardships of the Chihuahuan Desert, including drought, accidents, loneliness, and financial downturns in their efforts to raise goats and sheep. Overall it was a good book. The author writes in an interesting manner. It was funny and easy to read. But what I didn't like is the fact that while she talks about not being obsessed with food, it sounds like she's obsessing about food throughout the book. Maybe because I was reading about it and that's what the major topic was? I don't know. In any event, I've used some of her methods and I'm happy with the results thus far.

I've read a few pages of this one and was quite taken with the author's voice. I think it's going to be a very entertaining story. Stay tuned... And the update. I enjoyed it very much! A lighthearted romp about two "awakened" young men...and the problems that can be had when their "power" gets away from them. I read this on my NOOK; transferred the epub version over to it, and it worked out really well. I also read some of it on my Galaxy II using the Kindle reader app, and it also looked really nice.

This book is a coming of age story that simply enthralls readers much in the same way as L.M. Montgomery's timeless works, but in a far more adult and sophisticated way. I would recommend this to everyone over the ages of 14. There is a woman who was raped in it, although not at all graphically-- the woman tells Christy about it years later, and it honestly deals with the fear that the main character has around some, er..., less savory men, and it may be a bit too much for someone under that age. This book has to be the most wholesome, yet entrancing and uplifting, pieces of fiction I have ever read. Of course, the author based it heavily on the experiences of her mother, but it was very clear that it is not the exact experiences. I highly recommend it to anyone (whether or not they ask).

Young Jim Hawkins is whisked away on an adventure of a lifetime in the company of a handful of heroes and a crew of cut-throat pirates led by Long John Silver, the craftiest pirate of them all. This is a brilliantly gripping story with a whole host of wonderful characters.

A standalone prequel to Ash: A Secret History, this doesn't really match up to its promise. This is more of a travelogue style of fantasy, with the main character visiting important places -- just because, really. In Ash, there always felt like there was a reason for the travelling. Here, it's to show off the world, but sadly it doesn't do it that well. There isn't enough story for a book this length, which is a real shame. The main character's obsession with painting gets a bit wearying after a few hundred pages, not because it's a boring topic, but because every painting scene seems to be told in the same way. And the characters seem far too accepting of someone with Ilario's physical characteristics as a hermaphrodite for 15th century Europeans - even alternate history 15th century Europeans. There is interesting stuff on gender in the book, including a trans woman, Neferet. I was sorry she wasn't a more prominent character, and sorrier she seemed to have the same voice as all the others. The book certainly kept me turning the pages, but overall it's left very little lasting impression, unlike Ash. It's not among Mary Gentle's best work.
I'm not sure how i feel about this book. since a lot of it is true, it didn't really have a plot. it was descriptions of events, some seemed unrealted things that he just remembered and some went with the book. It was interesting because it didn't talk about how he felt hardly at all. You just had to sort of guess by what he did and what was going on around him how he felt. It was mostly about what it's like to be a marine, i guess, and it's such a massive subject that with this book you just get pieces and parts of the experience.
