Yancey invariably writes in an interesting, readable, and highly uplifting style. To most of his books I would give a 5 out of 5. This one, however, I was tempted to give a 2 or a 3. Why? Let me explain. Yancey’s book is divided into 10 parts, each with a description of his experience in diverse places where people had endured, in most cases, great suffering or injustice. Each part also contains the substance of a message he gave to groups in such a situation. Throughout he seeks to answer the question, What Good Is God? Each of the places he visited reflects the difficulty of seeing God’s goodness while cast down on a bed of suffering or blinded by skepticism or legalism. The places and situations are: the Virginia Tech massacre, the suffering church in China, a convention of sex workers, Cambridge, hotbed of skepticism and home of C.S. Lewis, Bible College and the failure of southern fundamentalism, the challenges and triumphs of the new South Africa, Memphis and the civil rights movement, the church in the Middle East, what Alcoholics Anonymous has to teach the church, and the terrorist attack in Mumbai. In each of these situations Yancey gives us candid comments and helpful insights. Each situation, crisis, or scenario would be worthy of a book on its own. I must admit, the section on what we can learn from AA is worth the price of the book. However, I wonder if Yancey’s very success led his publisher to request another book for his legion of fans. While it is well done, it almost appears as if Yancey has gathered together a lot of messages and stuff contained in other books and repackaged them. The stuff about legalism at the Bible College he attended, I must have read three or four times in his various books. The theme of the book does not come through thoroughly enough nor is it systematically addressed to be satisfying. If you are looking for a combination memoir, overview of the world church, and travelogue, along with theological musings, then this is the book for you.
