if this is representative of the tess monaghan ouevre, i am very disappointed. i'll give the series one more try but that is all. such a shame considering how good "what the dead know" was.

A great piece of YA historical fiction. I think it would make a great companion to Night by Elie Wiesel.
This book is hilarious. I don't think I have ever laughed out loud while reading a book before, and this one had me laughing every other page.

I read this book in the hopes of learning more about the history of the city I just moved to. I certainly learned a lot, especially about the various boroughs, names of places etc. Although, I was able to read it quickly (2 hours each day on the train),its epic-length was a little exhausting and rather dull at certain points. I also felt that the plot was a little lacking. Each family or generation seemed to have their own struggles or challenges, but were resolved after several chapters. However I thought that the characters themselves were well described and accurate descriptions of the periods. Rutherford does a great job of representing the rich, the poor, the good, the evil and everyone in between. It is quite a task to write such a detailed novel covering nearly 400 years of history. Props to Rutherford for taking on such a challenge!
I asked Dana to recommend one book as a must-read. He proclaimed East of Eden one of his favorite books of all time. Now that I have read it- I must agree. At turns dark and despairing- yet somehow lovely.

Even though I technically didn't finish this book--I am so done with it.

The characters were so life like. The style of writing made it very easy to finish this book in less than a day. Elizabeth Gilbert's review of the book was spot on when she called the novel smart and delightful and when she commented about forgetting (the characters) weren't (her) actual friends and neighbors. Loved this book!!!! ---- (I wish this site allowed half stars cause honestly I'd give this book 4.5 stars.)
