I was mesmerized by both the plot and the lyrical prose of this book. The translator must have been a poet. I recommended it to a friend, who so disliked it, he won't take any more recommendations from me. He said it was something his "mother would read." I guess that is a bad thing. So, if one has a Y chromosome, one may not appreciate this book -- but it is a flaw on the reader, in my opinion, not the author

Let me just say, first off, that I suffered "Harry Potter" fatigue by the fifth book. I could never bring myself to finish that series. Too much of the same thing, over and over again. I think that the same applies here. I tried to like this book. Pullman, like Rowling, does an admirable job in creating a fantastic, immersive, world. The ideas are original and thrilling. I even enjoyed the overt jabs at institutional religion (i.e. the Catholic Church). However, I just couldn't stand the writing, and the characters seemed flat and one-dimensional. Maybe I've gotten too old for this kind of literature, but I still have hopes that science fiction/fantasy can still appeal to old farts like me.

** spoiler alert ** If you like adventure then your in for a real treat with this book.Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is most definitely a story filled with adventure and a quest to find one's destiny. In this book Harry goes on a quest to find horcrux’s. These horcrux’s are hidden as different items. Lord Voldemort creates them to make himself live longer and conquer more.He goes after Harry multiple times. In order for Harry to find them he has to drop out of Hogwarts. Harry, Hermione, and Ron all drop out with their current knowledge of wizardry to destroy any remnants of Voldemort in order to protect the wizardry world. J.K. Rowling has done it again! She manages to capture her reader right from the first page. You will not be able to take your eyes off of it. She mystifies the mind and manages to bring you into the story with the rest of the characters. We learn to appreciate the detail in the story from her detailing and her emotional and physical description. While reading do not be afraid to let your mind wander through out the dialouge to form mental pictures. I find the one of the greatest parts of reading this story. I recommend this story to anyone who like to read stories of adventure. If you are the type, like me who enjoys a good mystery also then this story is also for you.

I know Jon Stewart, The Daily Show, and Colbert are more honest and reliable news sources than the rest of the media, I just don't believe it. Ironically, it is that same gap between knowledge and belief that has resulted in this sad state. the reactionary, opinionated pundits keep talking down to these little basic-cable comedy shows, but the fact that their feathers are so ruffled shows that they are afraid, and that they consider this to be as serious as the rest of us. Why is Stewart the journalist who asks hard questions about the war? Why does he seem utterly ridiculous when he simply imitates real people? Why is Colbert the one who asked the senator who tried to put the ten commandments in his state courthouses (Lynn Westmoreland) just what they actually were, showing that the senator could name only three? More importantly, why doesn't this invigorate or upset anyone? Colbert's White House Press Corp address was the most impressive and honest satire on the state of our politics and the media who serve them. The fact that it was the only one should not diminish it. The world is gone mad. If Revelation is come, I can only hope that even bad Christians get to go to heaven, because I don't want to be stuck here with the likes of Bush and Westmoreland. If I didn't have a front seat to the odd implosion of American culture, I might think about moving to Canada. Oh yes, and Reuters has been bought out.

I wrote an essay on this book at university. It was one of my favourite books. I'll have to re-read the book to freshen my mind on the subject. If you're contemplating reading it I highly recommend - full of that peculiarly Russian literary style of combining philosophy with literature. I spent half my time reading it re-reading whole passages to better grasp a philosophical point Bitov was making. I loved the narrator voice as well. So very godlike and yet a Greek chorus. Sorry I can't be more specific at this point.

Dieses Buch ist kein Brüller. Und trotzdem gut. Das "Lexikon des Teufels" (ursprünglich auch bekannt als das Lexikon des Zynikers), ist ein Wörterbuch der üblen Sorte. Im Grunde geht es darum alternative, negativ eingefärbte Deutungsmöglichkeiten von willkürlich gewählten Begriffen (zumeist aus dem Politischen / Philosophischen) zu publizieren. Jemandem, den es nach humoriger Unterhaltung dürstet, würde ich es nicht verkaufen. Sehr wohl aber demjenigen, der sich danach sehnt die Dinge einmal alternativ zu betrachten und den schlimmsten Sinn einer Definition zu erfahren.
