I was saddened by the short-lived relationship between Tristan and Ivy, it would've been nice if it lasted a little more longer. It's not very often you'll find love stories involving angels, other than of the movie "City of Angels" which ended so badly and in opposition to this book--this one actually had a "happy" ending. Although, in the end I was amazed by the abrupt "change of heart" in such a brief time frame. This one caught my attention, read it and loved it!

I read this on a recommendation, and was very pleasantly surprised. A shocking original plot, that delivers on its promise.

** spoiler alert ** This book is exactly like Ender's Game--it's either just an awesome story or it's insanely deep. I'm going with the latter. The sad thing is the people who need to read this book never will, i.e. every CEO who has bastardized the American people. From reality TV to the ruin of college sports, this takes a nasty swing at the media and connects! (I wanted to write a line worthy of the back cover!) She deliberately leaves God out of the book. There is never one thought about God. American society is at it lowest--yet it's highest technologywise--note Katniss' recovery, all scars are removed and they even want to give her a boob job. Her health is restored perfectly, the same as Peeta. Society is at his lowest disgusting point. They send children to massacre eachother on TV and love it. Enter reality TV, in its most terrifying form. I could get into the sponsorship and compare it to sports but I'm getting bored of myself. Ultimate fighting, NBA players, camera feeds on Amen Corner at the Masters, The BCS, cameras in half time lockerrooms, college kids crying on the court--she takes a direct shot at all of it. Then there is the video game aspect which I won't get into. Loved it. A Nielsen must read. Thanks Erin!!
This book does an excellent job of making the experience of a war vivid. It's set in Germany at the very tail end of WWII when the country is basically falling into ruins around peoples' ears... It's written from the point of view of two young teenagers. The characterization is really good. I think it's very realistic in terms of war's impact on people, the characters all have layers and realistic motivations. I'm making it sound depressing, but it isn't really. It's sad sometimes, but sometimes it's happy and it's gripping and touching and very "human".
I've never actually read Jane Eyre before - seen the movies - it's very readable; references to beliefs commonly held in the day like physiognomy (you can just tell those peasant girls are going to be thick by looking at their faces); and the deep, and sometimes protracted, discussions of christian dogma in the middle of what is at heart a horrid novel, is an interesting mix. A fun read.

Well, gee - I finished all but the last 35 pages (WHY does a writer of history need to write 40 pages about WHY history is written?) - and the only thing I can say is, there's 6 months of my life I'll never get back. Now, that may be due partly to the fact that I just don't know that much about the Napoleonic era, or Russian history or social structure pre-revolution, so it wasn't quite as compelling as my usual 15-16th century European (English & French) fare. It might be due to the fact that there were far too many characters that went nowhere, added virtually nothing to the story, and thus made it much longer than necessary. But mostly, I think it's due to the fact that, aside from about 30-40 pages in the middle somewhere, I could care less about ANY of those people. 3 pages in, and I was sound asleep - thus the inordinate amount of time spent trying to plow through it. Not too sure why this is considered a "classic" or the "ultimate" - it was flat and meandering and seemed to be asking the entire time, "Why am I bothering to do any of this?" That's a good question. If I am going to read a book, it has to grab me at some point - like a Rutherfurd or M. George tome; this did not grab me, and I literally gave it EVERY opportunity. The only reason I finished it (and even though I didn't bother with the last 35 pages, I DO consider this a finish) is because I refused to let this book beat me - and I thought, maybe, it would eventually turn out to be Amazing; I was disappointed. I KNEW I should have picked up Anna Karenina instead...
