I thought Starter for Ten was quite a good read to begin with and it kept my attention throughout. However, it was too similar to the much funnier Adrian Mole series in many places. I found parts of it made me laugh out loud - particularly the parts at Alice's parents' house. But in general I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone unless they wanted a very easy read.

This book was a fascinating read, especially since I am so interested in addiction issues. I read it when Oprah was talking about it nonstop. Then I found out it wasn't really a factual memoir and it kinda peeved me. And I didn't like it so much after that. Though, I thought it a little over the top that Oprah made the author apologize to her on her show. P.S. Since writing this review, Oprah called Frey to apologize for making him apologize to her. Just so you know.

This was an interesting book as it followed the life of 4 abused kids which read through the oldest childs eyes. It was not like anything I have read before. It made me want to jump into the book and shake them for the way they thought but still knowing they had no control over it or knew any different. It was a very fast read but worth reading.

I can't believe that I actually liked this book as a kid. No idea what was appealing to me. A bunch of heavy metal band members become the legendary Hawklords in an endless battle that takes place after the downfall of civilization ffrom a death generator.

Amazing book and story...a must read.
This book (and the other three in the original story arc) were totally formative literary experiences for me as a kid. Something about Ender just totally GOT ME. I was in LOVE with the character. I read all the books many many times. I even did a speech from Speaker for the Dead for a monologue in drama in high school. Yikes. But I hadn't read any of them in years--probably, around 10 years or so since I last re-read--and I was curious to know what I'd think of them now. Reading this book now, I was reminded of all the things I found so compelling when I read it the first time... mostly, that all the interpersonal insights and descriptions of what goes on inside the characters' heads are just so damn POIGNANT. But now, everything seemed just a LITTLE trite, and the writing style was just a LITTLE too simple and obvious. Card actually talks about this in the author's introduction to this edition--kinda gets defensive actually in reaction to more "literary" criticism of his work. But I guess this is occasionally the problem with scifi--great ideas, mediocre wordsmithing. But ultimately, in this book, the ideas are enough. It's hard to say, but I am pretty sure I would not like this book as much as I did when I was a kid if I read it for the first time now. I know I've recommended it to a lot of book buffs over the years, and still would do so, but you have to be able to approach the book in a certain way to appreciate it, I think.
This Richard Jury novel took me a little longer to get into the meat of the story, but finally there were a few interesting plot twists.
I remember a coworker gave me this to read, and it was good, but not my type of reading.
