Yes, I actually read the Spanish language version of this book. Compelling, but not Marquez's best.

So this is, like, TOTALLY going to be the year that I finish all the books my book club is reading. I say this because this is book number 2 and I also finished book number 1. Wazzzzup. This is a memoir about life in and escaping from French penal colonies in French Guiana. Very interesting. However, as with many memoirs the memoirist's point of view gets in the way. Or maybe my awareness of the memoirist's point of view gets in the way. At any rate, I found myself thinking, "Really? Did everyone you meet, jailors included, come to the conclusion that you were a noble soul and that your repeated escape attempts were totally justified? Did local Indian tribes really embrace you and recognize your true self?" I'm just saying. Of course, I had none of these problems with the Keith Richards' autobiography (which I loved) even though he makes equally self-serving absurd comments. But I felt like I had more context to work with about Keith Richards before I read the book. So Keith alleges that Mick Jagger has a small penis. Is anyone who hasn't lived under a rock since the 60s surprised?

Most of the action of the story is talking, so the illustrations don't have much to show besides the various African animals Tiny talks to, but they are nicely done. The fun of the story comes in the baby elephant's concern that he will never be as big as the other animals and their voices as they convince him. The rhymes the elephants march to are fun. After reading the story with a group, I think I would go back and ask the kids to stand up and march as I read those rhymes again.

Behind the scenes stories of what goes on at Disney Land. The three star rating rating is because it gets repetitive.
Good to re-read today. Puts our current economic situation in perspective

Pretty good story. From back cover: "A starter marriage hadn't been the first act Mary Ellen Black had meant to script for herself, but bowing out provided hard-won perspective: The most important things in life were not things at all, but the people she held dear. In her case, the lovable eccentrics she called family, the ones who were more than ready to support her leading role-if only she'd step into the spotlight. So now Mary Ellen's drafted act two-her return home-and she's pretty sure she's ready for the performance of Her Life, starring a strong, single mother of two. She's all dressed up and ready to take on the world...and take back the woman she was meant to be."

I loved this book-it was a little contrived and full of unbelievable coincidences with a tidy ending, and yet I really enjoyed reading it. Takes place in Boston, the story takes place over one winter day, about a family of characters who learn to be honest with each other and themselves after an accident throws them together. Worth reading and by an author I have enjoyed in the past!
