The New Stories from the South series has given birth to many authors who went on to great acclaim. The 2000 edition is worth reading for the second story in the volume, Sheep, alone. The stories are all very different, some political (like Sheep), some touching (Story for Flannery O'Connor), and some hysterical. Great things can be expected from these young authors.

I first read this book for a class I took my senior year in high school. That was back in 1996. I still have this book on my bookshelf. At least once a year, I still take it down to read a couple chapters or more. Every time I read it, I rediscover a part of the book that I find hilarious. How many books have you read can make you laugh ten years later? Few if any I imagine. This book is what inspired me to go to Yemen. After reading the 2nd and 3rd chapters (both of which are in Yemen), I knew I would have to visit one day. Took me a few years to get there, but I did it. Lastly, even though this book was published in 1992 and many of the chapters are from events in the 80s, I can say from personal experience that a lot of what takes place in this book STILL goes on in the Arab world. As the proverb says, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." This is a must-read for anyone even remotely interested in the Middle East.

It is not easy to feel any sympathy for conquistadors, but a few times in reading this, I was rooting for them. Granted, Orellana wasn't quite as brutal as Cortez or Pizarro, and would try diplomacy with natives that his party encountered, but he still didn't seem to have any problem plundering any village he came across and emptying it of all the food. An interesting point mentioned early on was that he kept his men busy while they weren't travelling because otherwise they would start raping and pillaging. What was wrong with these people that boredom would result in rape? Anyway, the book is very readable, and so chock-full of adventures that it could have been much longer. In fact, a would-be fiction writer could find lots of inspiration for a great adventure novel from just one episode from Orellana's ordeal. He and his men went through so much that at the end of the book when it mentioned that he was just 34 years old I was surprised (it probably mentioned his age at the beginning, but I missed it). Recommended if you're into this kind of thing.

I read this last night in less than two hours. So that's a bonus. Overall, though, not nearly as good as Feed, which I really like.

A sweet, short story of a small girl in a large family.

Not Ben Elton's best at all and an ending that seemed pulled from nowhere, but the messages held strong enough to make this readable and for the most part, enjoyable. Some of the morals are a little heavy-handed (as with most Ben Elton books) but it's an easy read, despite the subject matter. A really interesting build-up spoiled by a less than satisfactory ending. Okay, but easily forgettable.

An excellent read
A brilliantly adult ending to a brilliantly universal set of stellar stories.

Probably one of the most interesting and well written books I've ever read. I loved it.
