Overall extremely informative, but it's filled with a surprising amount of errata for a 5th edition. Also, some very questionable/hilarious design sensibilities throughout.

I like this series. It has interesting characters and a different plot. The big problem I have is that Harrison badly needs a good editor. There are major flow issues with most of the books in this series. At times, the actions of characters are disjointed and don't make sense. Someone will be in the kitchen one second and in the other room in another without any indication of them moving. The dialogue has that same problem. SOmetimes you feel as if you have walked into the middle of a conversation and passages have to be read over and over before you get the gist of what is going on. Harrison also has problems with her characters staying in character. One book will portray a character as a unreemable bad guy in one buy, but hey guess what-in the next he is saving everyone. I'm not saying characters are either good or bad, but they need to act concistently not like the author can't make up his/her mind. I admit she has come along way from the first book in the series. Now she needs to go back and do some rewrites.

I've only read the Latin. I'd probably like it more if I read the translation and didn't have to labor over doing it myself...

In my quest to return to serious reading and thinking about poetry as an art form, I dug up this gem of a collection. It is not what I expected, which was a lighthearted, folksy, '70s-style reminiscence about the 'new' poets of that era getting back to the land, embracing wholistic lifestyles and penning humorous lyrics about their experiences. Instead, it is a very serious discussion about craft, some of which is entirely scholarly in nature, from Kumin and other lettered luminaries of the post-war poetry community, primarily academics. I really enjoyed this, though its tone is somber, almost morose at times. One of the more moving moments includes Kumin's own eulogy for the late Anne Sexton. In fact, the 'life in the country' part of this book is almost an afterthought--most of it is about the writing life, and the agony and the ecstasy of being an artist in late twentieth century America.

This book was a lot of fun, but like a lot of sci-fi-esque novels that use a wacky trope to explore pertinent Social Issues (which is almost all sci-fi-esque novels), it fell short for me. I loved the idea of the Atonement (the US bombing itself to atone for dropping the big ones on Japan) and the way conjoined twins could function as a symbol of all kinds of minority identities). I'm into exploring the whole otherness=monstrosity thing, and she did a lot of funny stuff with it on the surface, but it just didn't gel for me. Plus the characters and plot also felt spotty and half-realized. I loved Nora's first-person narrative voice, and the "scrapbook" sections. I felt Jackson reaching--this is an incredibly ambitious novel, and that's hard to pull off. I enjoyed Half Life, but I wanted to love it.

Nietzsche is a complete bastard, but his German is beautiful, and this book is written line-for-line in both English and German, making it a great book to practice your language skills without a dictionary.
I was enthralled by this book. I could not put it down to the degree that I was attempting to incorporate it into everyday life, like bathing and walking and sleeping. This book was so crazy awesome I was considering offering it a medal for heroic conduct. Then I got to the ending. This book has the single most anticlimactic and unsatisfactory ending in the history of contemporary literature. I will not spoil it for you, though it is plenty spoiled already. I have never uppercutted a book before this one.
