Watched, by Cindy M. Hogan was way good. It was a face paced murder. Throughout the story the character who was telling the story, Christy, grew a lot throughout the book. She was used to having no friends back home in Montana and coming to Washington D.C. for a school trip made her very different. She became liked. This book is thrilling and intense. I like how the author always told how Christy was feeling. I also liked how Christy had lots of good values. I also like the love triangle in this book! Overall this was a fantastic book! I liked it a lot.

Following the true story of a priest working in the more dangerous areas of East Los Angeles, this book paints the bleak life of those stuck in gang life. Partly the observations of the author as she followed along with Father Greg, and partly the stories of gang members themselves it's an uncompromising look at their lives, that paints them as human beings rather than monster kids out of control. I found this book very heavy going towards the end. More often than not the gang members who tell their stories die as the book progresses, leaving others to tell their own story and express their grief of the loss of their friends. Devistating, and unapologetic, it's probably one of the few books I've wanted to end sooner due to it's emotional content.

The Hunger Games is set in an unspecified future time when things have gone pretty spectacularly badly for humanity. The world, or the bit of it we can see, is dominated by a ruling caste who live in luxury in a city called the Capitol. The rest of them live like peasants in 12 districts that are strictly cordoned off from the Capitol and one another. Life in the districts sucks: it's mostly hard labor--mining coal and farming and working in factories--in bad conditions. To make things even worse, once a year each district is required to give up two of its children, chosen by lottery/raffle, and enter them in the Hunger Games. The kids are dropped into an enormous arena covered with traps and hazards, with a pile of weapons and supplies in the middle. The last child alive wins a lifetime of luxury and celebrity. The action is filmed and broadcast to the entire world. We experience this ordeal through the eyes of Katniss, a resident of District 12, a harsh, cold region mostly given over to coal-mining. She is a passionate 16-year-old who hates the Capitol and is devoted to her family; she volunteers for the Games to take the place of her sister, whose name came up in the lottery. Katniss is a skilled hunter and sheer death with a bow and arrow. She doesn't like to kill. But she doesn't want to die either. So Katniss tries her hardest to survive and make it back to her family, she succeeds at this by fake falling in love with the other tribute from district 12 Peeta, so that they can both get home safely. when both of them survive they start a accidental revolution against the capitol.

Deserves more than one read to fully appreciate the different paths the girls take to womanhood and self-realization. It's like unopening a present, but starting from the inside and going out. You don't really know what you're looking at until you get through it all... and even then...

I love the amount of research that Bushman has done which places Joseph so firmly in his time, and yet so firmly in ours.I found this book informative and inspiring, although it's a dense read...thick with facts instead of flowing narrative. But I guess that's why it's scholarly.

Gary and Lisa Heim have written an excellent book about how to react to the big and little irritations that each of us faces in life. They phrase it in terms of "Going South" or "Going North". South is reacting as typical human beings, while going North involves consulting God first before reacting. That's a simplified version of the concept, but that's it in a nutshell. Great diagrams add a visual element to the concept. Gary Heim wrote the majority of the chapters, but his wife Lisa also contributed several. Numerous personal examples from various people are included. The latter part of the book is dedicated to explaining how we can stay close to God and keep "heading North."

This is one of the most annoying books I have ever read. It was horrible. The writing isn't bad, it's not that, but the story is just unbelievable and the characters are so one dimensional and unlikable. I didn't like China Cup (seriously? i mean really, this is her name?) and I really didn't feel for her when tragedy happened which is strange because that is the reaction I assume the author wanted but she went too fast. We barely get to know China or her daughter before things start falling apart and it's just gets worse from there. This child is just dumb. I'm sorry, the things she falls for are just crazy. She believes everything anyone tells her and she is very selfish too. And very silly. You don't have a baby by someone and tell them it's your burden alone. I just wanted to smack her 99% of the time I read this so I am glad I finished it so I never have to see it again.

One of the most weird and wonderful books I've ever read. If quirky isn't your thing, then this book is not for you. If you can completely suspend reality and just go with it, you won't be disappointed.
