Al-Ghazali, the champion of Islamic Orthodoxy, the undisputed Renewer of the faith for his century, superstar jurist, thinker, lecturer, and mystic, had his views on philosophy, role of the consensus of the juridical community, and ta'wil (still have to figure out what that is). Ibn Rushd disagreed with Al-Ghazali's accusation of disbelief against Ibn Sina and Al-Farabi, and other Islamic philosophers. He also had a different spin on the concepts of consensus and ta'wil. Eventually, Al-Ghazali's views became mainstream and Ibn Rushd's books were burned and his contributions considered heresy. We now know that they both had contributions that we can learn from, expand our simplistic views of the world, and convey some of the thoughts of the greatest thinkers of Islamic history.

I can't remember why I chose this book. I have kept it and plan to revisit it again this summer. I love mysteries.

An interesting take on what is wrong in the culture of work we all share in today's world.

This book is a lesson not to read everything on the best seller list. It started out good; story of a boy born unable to speak (no medical reason can be found) Mother and Father train and breed dogs for a living. Interesting how Edgar learns to communitcate with people and the dogs, and the bonds that are formed between them. However, the story takes a dark and confusing turn when the Father's brother comes back from War. This is a long, wordy and very depressing book, not to mention confusing. There are so many long passages that have no revelence to anything. The most interesting parts were the ones about the dogs.

A beautifully written novel. Explores fidelity, persistent determination, and the experience of love (both emotional and physical) at different ages, all over the course of a lifetime. It's an unusual love story, built on unending patience and devotion that is completely one-sided until circumstances allow it to be two-sided. The writing is stunning, and carries the heavy emotion of the story so effortlessly. "At midnight he put on his Sunday suit and went to stand alone under Fermina Daza's balcony to play the love waltz he had composed for her, which was known only to the two of them and which for three years had been the emblem of their frustrated complicity. He played, murmuring the words, his violin bathed in tears, with an inspiration so intense that with the first measures the dogs on the street and then the dogs all over the city began to howl, but then, little by little, they were quieted by the spell of the music, and the waltz ended in supernatural silence. The balcony did not open, and no one appeared on the street, not even the night watchman, who almost always came running with his oil lamp in an effort to profit in some way from serenades. The act was an exorcism of relief for Florentino Ariza, for when he put the violin back into its case and walked down the dead streets without looking back, he no longer felt that he was leaving the next morning but that he had gone away many years before with the irrevocable determination to never return." Cute, sassy read. A southern (texan) witch whose powers don't seem to work most of her life gets put in a very 'magical' situation and has to figure out how to save her family's ghost and the town and her ex, who she still loves. And there is a hot male witch mixed in there too, and he wants her bad. Good stuff.

I chose this book simply because I loved the series this author wrote (The Wilderness Series) under the pen name Sara Donati. It was interesting, but a bit depressing, giving a view of what life was like for a number of Austrian women in the early to mid 1900's. Sure made me happy I was born in a more modern time where women have actual choices about the life they wish to lead!

Interesting story and insight into a woman struggling with her identity. I found the ending somewhat cliche, but overall an interesting read.
