I identify with the main character's spiritual life. I dig the theology.

One of the worst books I've read. Pointless storyline with no substance. Unforgettable characters.

After hearing recommendations from DeAnn, I decided to try a Harlan Coben book - particularly after seeing it for only $5.50 from Costco. It was really good! I don't normally read the suspense/mystery genre, but couldn't put this book down and read it instead of writing a paper. I am definitely going to read some other of his books.

A discontinuous, digressive account of Fuller's travels on and around the Great Lakes in 1843 (when Michigan and Wisconsin were the Western frontier). Likely to appeal most to those who are interested in the Transcendentalists, early feminism, Midwest history, or Margaret Fuller herself. That's me in a nutshell; hence all those stars.

I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would. Even teared up in certain parts. Was very good though.

It starts out with a car chase in Greenpoint, which is home sweet home for me, e\and centers on the King of Smith Street. Lionel Essrog, the narrator, tells the story of the Minna Men through his Tourrette's suppressions and compulsions. The famous toothbrush paragraph is excellent, of course, and the overall narrative voice is great. The main strength of the book is the narrative voice and it's worth reading just to explore that. It's a good read, and was a surprisingly quick one for me. Saved my opinion of Lethem after You Don't Love Me Yet, (stay away from LA, Lethem, stick to BK) and I think I'll tackle Fortress of Solitude next. Anyone want to loan it? Ironically this has been waiting on the shelf for a long time because I was intent on reading it while actually in Brooklyn. I ended up reading it in Beijing, China. Which was in a way sort of better, for me, since I got to indulge any homesickness.

Very different in style from McCullough's book, Morgan's Run, which I read just before this, this was a real 'epic love story', as they would say on tv! I almost found there was too much there, it couldn't all be given the time it deserved, and some of the characters would have been deserving of a whole book themselves, instead they were just 'icing'. Fee, Frank, Patsy and all the 'Unks' ... we got to see glimpses of their lives, but they almost seemed to be there just to make things even more emotional. I am not a huge fan of anguished and unrequited love ... I want to yell "Just tell the truth!". Everyone tiptoes around with half truths, imagined truths - life would be a lot more fulfilling and a lot happier if everyone just expressed their feeling truthfully at the start! But I guess there would be no story then! Anyway, I still enjoyed this book greatly - definately a 'great epic love story', spanning the generations and the globe. Recommended.
