You know, maybe if I read James Patterson books back-to-back, in order, I would get tired of them. Maybe I would get tired of Alex Cross racing against time, and shoot-outs, and him always winning. But I don't. I buy them, and end up reading one every four or five months, if that. This keeps them fresh. Reading them out of order makes them even more interesting. It's only natural that a story like this would have a lot of the human element to it. But to be honest, that's always my least favorite part of the Alex Cross series. The kids are adorable and Nanna Mama is sassy, but if we only saw them at the beginning and end, with casual mentions in the middle, I would like that better. But this story was fabulous. Finding out the backstory to Maria's death, and meeting the villain, who is a seriously sick ticket. I have to say, I learned something about myself listening to this audiobook. This was the first Patterson book I listened to on audiobook. When I talk about Patterson, I acknowledge that his books are very gory, but I like them anyway. This is a whole other subject when the rape/murder/dismemberment is being read aloud to me. WOW. It takes on a level of disturbing I didn't know existed before. I will give it up for whoever decided to give the villain a separate narrator from Alex Cross. Not only did this help differentiate POV throughout the audiobook, but on the final confrontation, hearing the two voices speak to each other made it SO much more intense. I prefer reading Patterson to listening, but I won't say I'll never listen to another of his audiobooks. I just need to steel my loins ahead of time.

One of these great stories that left me feeling a bit wrung out. I've been thinking about how the story might be different if Virginia Woolf (or somebody) were the main character--if Lexi weren't so relatable would it be as compelling or thought-provoking? Hard to say more without giving something big away. I do think all the readers in my life would get a big kick out of this book.

This was definitely one of my favourite books yet! I read it in two days. Despite wishing there was a family reunion at the end of the story, I loved the book thoroughly. I wish there was a sequel!

This is probably my favorite Anne Tyler book. Parts of it are funny, but it really ends up feeling so melancholy. I love the part when Justine is telling the story of her crazy cousin to her carnival owner friend. Happy and sad, funny and frustrating. Disappointments occur throughout, just like life.
Quick, entertaining read. The ending cries out for a sequel sooner rather than later. (Is it wrong of me to complain there was no Ivan? I love Ivan.)
I am not a Freudian, but his is the father of modern psychology so he earned a second star. It's good background knowledge, like the King James Bible, but not entirely apllicable to modern day society when taken in context. I'm an Adlerian, especially when it comes to dream interpretation.
Jordan is accused of stealing money from a house where she is working on landscaping. Since she can't afford an attorney the court is ready to appoint one when her best friend calls an attorney for her. Jordan's old boyfriend is now a lawyer and determined to help her through this even though he is "almost engaged" to someone else. In a minor way it deals with forgiving and judging.

I learned that my Mom would get very angry about the kind of "smut" I was reading even after I passed age 18. She did not care for this book. I, on the other hand, enjoyed the smuttiness immensely.

Like pretty much all of July's work, this left me at times elated, perplexed, revolted, aroused, and nostalgic. There's a reason she is a polarizing artist. I'm firmly in the "love her" camp. I can see why others aren't, but still.
