I'm having quite a conundrum. While I can appreciate the originality of the whole sliding business and the suspenseful whodunnit mysteries patent in this book, there is a certain disorganization in the plot events that was unable to hold my initial enthusiasm over this book. I can understand the need to give us a taste of what sliding was like for Vee but I thought that the author didn't quite succeed in providing a cohesiveness to the events necessary to have a smooth, well-told story. I found that Vee spent so much time agonizing about what she should do than actually doing what she's supposed to do. I can understand her reluctance to a degree. After all, the realization that she had the ability to change things came late in the game. She didn't actually decide her course of action until there was only about less than a quarter left to the book. And even then, the author just kind of glanced over the fact, it wasn't really discussed in a detailed manner. A great quality of a murder/mystery novel is the methodical way in which it was solved. Unfortunately, Slide was lacking in this department. A lot of the fact finding hinges on Vee's abilities so really, the clues were mostly to the letter that they leave less to the imagination of the reader. I'm a bit disappointed in the randomness of her ability as well. There wasn't any scientific or even any mystical explanations given. It was just...there. The predictability factor in this book was also too transparent - and I'm not talking about the eventual murderer. I thought that the author tried too hard to sway me into believing the credibility of the obvious suspects that it hindered my enjoyment of actually solving the puzzle right along with Vee. There was an over all coldness - aloofness with all the characters here. It's difficult to sympathize to anyone when it seems like they don't really want you to feel anything for them. That's pretty much how I felt about everyone in this book. The characters failed to grab me. Most of the reviews on Goodreads were liking Vee to Veronica Mars. Unfortunately, I've seen nary an episode so I can't really say whether or not I agree. I have griped about the high school stereo-types over and and over again and Slide was full of them. But. BUT. Slide's use of these typecasting is forgivable because the story actually revolved around the high school society echelon. To summarize, this book just didn't hit the spot. It was a good read but not a great one.

Sài Gòn Đất Lành Chim Đậu - Tập 2 Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

WOW! This was so absolutely amazing and not what I thought it was going to be. I avoided it for years thinking it was "killer plants taking over the world 50s B-movie style" but I was fnugging WRONG. If ever there was a piece of literature (or any other media for that matter) that so understated yet made so believable such an at-first-glance ridiculous premise, it is this novel. The characterizations were wonderful. I really knew Bill, Coker, and Josella right off the bat in fewer words without the over-wrought character development that a lot of novels fall prey to. With just a few finely crafted words, I truly knew these people. Sure, it was quite G-rated (which Im fine with but its a little *too* obvious that he's skirting around the sex issue for wholesome 50s sake) and dated, but that in no way gets in the way of its effectiveness even in today's culture. In fact, 50s speak is the *only* thing that dates it; everything else is very valid today (maybe rename Russia to N Korea or something [shrugs:]). I wanted more. I wanted way more. I was sad when it ended. ***KINDA SPOILERS AHEAD*** No, we never find out exactly what caused it. We speculate maybe it was aliens who brought the plants all along. Id rather not know. Because in reality, between you and me (read: "the average Joe"), if something like that does happen, you know we arent going to be privy as to why it happened and that just makes it all the more realistic in my book. And even thought John Wyndham was himself an Englishman, I love how he pokes fun at England for being such a pompous prick thinking its better than everyone AND for poking fun at the US in practically the same breath thinking its the world's saviour. LOVES IT! And of course, I love the little digs at "God" as well. You snuck some really cool stuff in there Wyndham. Wish I had discovered you sooner!

Chuyện Nghề - Chuyện Người Thư viện Sách hướng dẫn

I read this book because there was hella butts on the cover and it always caught my eye on the shelf. After enough eye-catching, I finally read the back cover blurbs and decided that a story about a failing hippie commune was something I could work with. Since I was about 12 I've had a "problem" with T.C. Boyle, in that I always maintained that I "didn't like him" for "various reasons" which were actually "undefined" and maybe "actually non-existent." This is the first book of his I've read. And it was as awesome as the butt photo portended! I was unendingly impressed with Boyle's style; this man uses beautiful, textured language in a completely unpretentious way. The characters are compelling and real, and nothing about the narrative struck me as sensationalist or voyeuristic (as hippie novels can so often be). I may even read another non-butt cover Boyle book. How's that for a recommendation? P.S. While I was writing this at the info desk at work, a dude came and asked (my breasts) if we had a book in stock. It was creepy. We did not have the book, and I assumed he would be on his way. But then he came back and asked if I had a boyfriend. I did that thing where you say yes while smiling and acting all wistful like "oh sir, I sure wish that I did not because the way you are staring at my breasts is making me wish I could go on a date with you RIGHT THIS SECOND!" A rather unsettling night.
