I like this series of books because I like to solve mysteries. There are really creative things the characters do in these books that I would never even think to do.

Recent article about Nemirovsky: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/26/boo... this is not my review, but a piece that appeared in the new republic about irene nemirovsky. turns out, her other novels are shockingly anti-semitic, viz., "Némirovsky's stories of corrupt Jews--some of them even have hooked noses, no less!--appeared in right-wing periodicals and won her the friendship of her editors, many of whom held positions of power in extreme-right political circles. When the racial laws in 1940 and 1941 cut off her ability to publish, she turned to those connections to seek special favors for herself, and even went so far as to write a personal plea to Marshal Pétain. And after her arrest her husband, Michel Epstein, pleaded with the German ambassador for her release, arguing that 'it seems ... unjust and illogical to me that the Germans would imprison a woman who, though originally Jewish, has no sympathy, and all her books show this ... for Judaism.'" This series is addicting. At some point I felt guilty reading them but they were too fun to put down. One of my favorite aspects is how with each book, you are in that exact moment in time down to the news on the television, clothing trend and drug of choice. Add to your summer reading/book for the beach list.
i liked this, i did...but strangely i suspect i'd like the movie better. it seemed like a story gorged on the author's disdain for humanity and needing some visual, lyrical layer. that doesn't make any sense, re-reading it, but it's before 9 am so i'm going with it.

~ Title: “The Goddess Test” ~ Author: Amiee Carter ~ Publisher: Harlequin Teen ~ Release Date: April 26, 2011 ~ Source: NetGalley Sorry it took me so long to write this review! First of all, I love Greek mythology! It one of the many reasons I wanted to read this book. I found this book to be refreshing from all the vampires, angles, fairies, etc. books running around these days (not that I have a problem with them…I love them all!). Debut author Amiee Carter has woven a wonderfully captivating tale of love, forgiveness, and strength. I have seen quite a bit of negative reviews for this book which surprised me at first. But, then I thought about it and I can see where the reviewers are coming from. The two main characters do come off as somewhat “weak.” Kate is naïve and VERY trusting, while Henry is rather bland for a God (he does have his sweet moments, though). But maybe they were meant to be that way. Everyone has flaws; characters in books are no different…that’s what makes them real and relatable. Were they areas in the plot that could have been elaborated on or done differently? Sure, but I think, all in all, it was well written. Carter's writing style is easily to follow and understand. And, I loved how she described the entrance to Henry’s manor. I had no trouble “seeing” the scenes Carter painted with her words. I thought the book was well written. Even though I saw most of the “plot twists” coming from a mile away, I still enjoyed them. One thing that was real and powerful was the relationship between Kate and her Mother. I liked how the author mentioned other myths and how Kate is “schooled” in mythology. It also lets the reader into that world more. I gave “The Goddess Test” 4 stars because I really enjoyed reading the book. It drew me in and maybe that had something to do with my love of mythology. I think it’s worth picking up if you are looking for a nice, quick read. I will definitely be checking out the sequel “Goddess Interrupted” (January 2012). I hope this review was helpful and made at least made some sense. Lol First posted @ http://thebookfariy.blogspot.com/2011...

Haven't read the manga but I've watch the anime. This is very similar to Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. I like it because it is funny and action-packed but at the same time it also has a heart and the back stories of the characters are really well done.

This is a great intro to Shakespeare - who he was and what we actually know about him. I've challenged myself to study one Shakespeare play every three months, and I started with this as background information. Much reading whatever bio of Shakespeare that comes with each play.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book. And it shifts strongly from one track that you think you are headed down to a completely different tack. All the while, I was just amazed at the creativity of the author--to be able to come up with this and to use it to really tell another side of the whole Holocaust--maybe what survivors dealt with. It almost made for me the reality and the harshness and the "never again"-ness even more stark and important than other books that have focused on the suffering and horribleness of the death camps themselves. The imagery and characters, and emotions, are so strong it is hard to separate this as a work of fiction and to separate it from your thinking whilst reading.
It took me over a year to read this the first time through, and it'll probably take me that long to read it again... After reading book:[I Am a Strange Loop], I'm going to put this back on the shelf.
