This review is about the unabridged audiobook read by Bill Bryson. I enjoyed this book as much as the first book of his that I read (listened to,) "Tales from a Sunburned Country." I was laughing out loud as Bryson narrates a series of childhood adventures. He has a clear reading voice with a slight British accent that is hilarious as he deadpans the childhood exaggerations in his novel, such as a woman being six hundred years old. For those of us not born in the 1950s (I was 1977, myself) this book provides a glimpse into childhood in the 50s and 60s, revealing a lot about history that I was not aware of, and gave me insight into what childhood must have been like for my own parents. Bryson seems to know what details are interesting and pertinent and leaves the rest completely out. If you are an audiobook lover as I am, this book is a must-read.

Right firstly, me being me, I did not like some of the names in this story. The author draws heavily on celtic names and my mind goes blank when I try to rponounce them. But this is just a little thing, and it is not all of the names, a couple of them are really superb. More seriously the story itself is a typical fantasy set up, with a dark force beginning to move against the world and the desperate main characters oing their best to save the world. Of course this a pattern that a lot of books follow and as in all cases it is the way the story is told that makes the difference. In this instance the evil force is well advanced, already in a position of power and it is the rest of the unconquered world that are doing their best to overthrow the rule of someone who has become so powerful that she is almost a goddess walking the world. When a child is born that might just be the saviour of the world it becomes a race against time, as the evil forces try and destroy her, while the good try to save, culminating in a dramatic and incredibly well written showdown on a mountaintop. And all this is in the opening few chapters. The Hidden Stars introduces and paints a picture of a rich fantasy world, with some compelling and interesting characters, not to mention an excellent story that draws the reader in and keeps them reading. Parts of the writing amost feel as though it is being delivered in a conversational tone, making it feel more intimate. There is not, as is often the case overlong novel, instead it is the right mix of history, magic and conflict, that tells its story wonderfully, giving a world that feels well developed and drawn perfectly giving the right amount of background and depth to mak it feel real without dragging it down. An excellent, enjoyable read that definately leaves you wanting more. A sequel that will be read.
This is an excellent book for those interested in interesting writing. I've gotten much from it, and plan to continue getting much from it, as I read more.

Welcome to the Palace of Chemical Love. A colourful Organic Chemistry textbook (yeah, there are a lot of colours in there). Possibly the most colourful textbook I've ever read. It was hectic, it was good. Makes for some nice, light bedtime reading. It's also kind of heavy.

"Problematics was for word people, so that was what Jimmy took. Spin and Grin was its nickname among the students. ... The prospect of his future life stretched before him like a sentence; not a prison sentence, but a long-winded sentence with a lot of unnecessary subordinate clauses." ---------------------------------------- Pretty brutal, pretty plausible. But I'm pretty sure I'll be dead by the time this all goes down, so at least there's that.
This was such a hard story to stomach...to say I liked it would be a crime. A story based on true events involving, abuse, neglect, the death of a child...it was hard to stomach. But a true and sad account on domestic violence that occurs more often than we want to admit. The writing was simple, to the point. It has very graphic images, recommended not for the light of heart or soul.
An engrossing psychological thriller set in New York City in the late 19th century. The plot had me hooked from word one, and I thoroughly enjoyed the historical fiction aspect of the book. I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 because the ending was somewhat of a letdown, but overall a riveting read.
Damn funny. Who knew lists of nothing could be this good. I like to read this on the john for a quick "ha-ha."
I typically love John Irving, but this was a bit overdone and I think he's exhausted the weirdo, wrestler guy character. that said, it was still readable but took me forever especially since it was close to 800 pages (hardcover)
Loved it!
