This novel painted incredibly poignant images for me; Brooks constructs ideas of war, love, persistence, marriage, and death more meaningfully in single sentences than other authors do in entire novels. Only caveat is the graphic war scenes near the beginning. The narration, however, is worth the read. Outstanding novel.

19yo heroine may lose her family ranch & her 3 younger brothers to foster care unless she marries her late stepmother's wealthy brother. She opts for marriage but doesn't want him rushing her into physical intimacy. Heroine doesn't feel right going to bed with Hero without love. A car accident pushes her to see how much Hero means to her. But did all that waiting drive Hero to change his mind about staying married to her? This book started out well enough, with increasing sexual awareness b/w Hero & heroine and a promising romance. But it went downhill after all the waiting heroine did to decide when she felt comfortable enough to consummate her marriage to Hero. I wouldn't have minded if Armstrong filled that waiting period with Hero & heroine doing some deep introspection or some growing up or something that kept their sexual tension brewing. Instead what we get are mundane details about the household (i.e., heroine's younger brothers, their housekeeper, her brother's dog). It bored me silly. So, when heroine finally make up her mind, I was no longer interested. Minimally recommended. Expect some boredom.

I guess with this book, you either identify with it, or you don't. I don't. Holden is SO whiney. About everything. He is the definition of emo. There are much better coming of age novels out there.

أين المفر من كل هذا السواد؟ أسلوب كتابتها صعب الفهم; بسبب الطول الزائد عن اللازم للجمل, والكثير من الجمل الاعتراضية شديدة الطول, والتي تفقدك تركيزك. لكن في المجمل هو كتاب مفيد ويستحق القراءة, إن كنت مهتمًا بهذه الفترة من التاريخ, أو مهتمًا حتى بفهم ما حدث بعد الثورة المصرية ويحدث الآن, لأن الأمراض النفسية وأمراض المجتمع وأمراض الصفوة أو النخبة لم تختلف كثيرًا. أعجبني الفصل الثالث (المثقف عاشقا), وتوضيحها وتفصيلها لعلاقة المثقف بالمرأة. وأعجبني كثيرًا الصدق غير المكترث حتى بالحفاظ على صورتها أمام نفسها, واعترافها بضعفها الإنساني وعدم خجلها منه.

***SPOILERS ALERT*** This book was a little bit slow at the beginning but picked up and ended with a bang, well actually a fire. Maya lives in the small town of Salmon Creek, a medical research city that is privately owned by the Saint Cloud family, with her adopted parents where the children are required to get a yearly physical. The families that live in Salmon Creek were hand picked to work at the research center and live in the town. The students have been drilled on how to handle reporters so when Mina Lee shows up asking questions specifically about the students they know exactly what to do. Maya is strong and has a good sense of humor and not one of those whiny and clingy females. Daniel is Maya's best friend and is very protective of her. While at a tattoo shop Maya learns that she is a skin-walker and later learns that so is her love interest Rafe and his sister. Maya gets energy from nature, has control over animals, and healing powers. At the end of the book the city needs to be evacuated because of a forest fire. Maya, Rafe, and Daniel run across two men in the forest as the are running from the fire and learn that they are there to take Maya and possibly others. One of the men has the same facial features as Maya...can we say biological father? Maya and her friends are safely evacuated on via helicopter. There are secrets being kept in Salmon Creek and I look forward to learning more about them in the next book.
