This was a very different childrens' book - quite dark and almost disturbing in parts, but with an overall positive message of love and compassion and understanding. I found it a bit slow to get started, and a lot of the middle section was almost unpleasant to read, but it was worth it for the conclusion. A younger reader would have to persist to gain satisfaction from this book. Certainly unusual, with a hero who is unlikable and far from heroic. I didn't really like ther etelling of some of the fairy tales - a bit obvious and silly at times. I think the story would have been as good without them, even though the Rumplestiltsken story was central to the plot. Overall, a recommended read for a confident reader - probably over 10 (a good 10 year old reader), to about 15?

I was always interested in the life of Queen Elizabeth. I spent a lot of time reading about her growing up- I found many of her biographies, or even fictional stories about her were great. This written depiction of Queen Elizabeth was extremely well written.

Fantastic hybrid graphic novel. The citizens of a small New England town are terrorized by a werewolf over the course of a year. The unlikely hero is a boy in a wheelchair. I'm not sure why it took me so long to get my hands on this King classic, but I'm glad I finally did.

Ishmael Beah lost his family and went on the run before being eventually conscripted as a child soldier in Sierra Leone. His story is horrific, and I'm glad I read the book because I learned a lot about a war and a part of the world that I previously knew little about. Still, I found the book a tedious read because Beah is simply not a very good writer. His style was juvenile, and his tiring attempts at literary flourishes were terribly cliched. Additionally, the story lacked a clarity that often left me confused about chronology, geography, and exactly what was taking place. His story is important, but it should have been dictated to a professional writer. I have also read that an Australian newspaper claims the events as described in the book may be conflations of actual events. These allegations have not been proven, but if it is later found that Beah's story is even in part fabricated by faulty memory or a deliberate effort to deceive I would have to give A Long Way Gone zero stars.

I wasn't as thrilled with this book as with 'Ghosts of the Titanic'. It was still interesting, but I never really got into it. It's a scientific exploration of the theory that the lost island of Atlantis is modern day Thera (Greek Island in the Aegean Sea), which 'submerged' due to an immense eruption of the volcano on it, around c1640 b.c. It's as detailed as the current archaelogical excavations of the island allow it to be (allowing for the fact that the book was written in 1991), and it also details some other huge volcanic eruptions in modern times, including Mount St Helens and St. Pierre.
