An interesting story of 1960's, Southern women. Her characters are fun and mostly believable. It follows three women--one white and two black as they live in and try to change their circumstances.

I absolutely love this book. I feel like I am a close personal friend of the Lynches. Russo weaves story after story into their lives which could seem mundane to some outsiders. After about 50 pages you are hooked on their daily ups and downs and would like to spend some time at Ikey's, a mom and pop store I can picture perfectly. (Mine were called "Cooley's" and "the Englewood Store.") I am very excited about hearing him lecture tonight.

I've had this book a long time, I'm a fan of Anne Tyler and her silly word play, but I think I put off reading this as I don't like the title. The story is cute, Barnaby Gaitlin is the black sheep of his well to do family, he was a juvenile delinquent and is now underachieving in his mid-30s (living in somebody's basement and providing manual labor for a small operation called Rent A Back). The phrase patchwork planet refers to an ugly quilt design created by a favorite client, it only comes up once and briefly and I don't really get why it's the title of the book. Maybe Barnaby's mind operates in a somewhat patchwork-y fashion? I love his snarky "Old Baltimore" family, and identify with his older, managerial girlfriend Sophia.

There is an entire subtext in this story about the development of a chef. It is also a tale of decision making in the course of life, and of relying on an intuitive sense of what is right at each moment - and never looking back and second-guessing.

If you'd like to read how the witty, cruel and verbose manage to get through life, start here. Amis is at once exasperated and fascinated with his first half-century or so and manages to give Samuel Beckett, the popular media and pretty much anyone who's ever looked at him cockeyed a nice thump on the head. Alternately, he explores his complicated relationship with his father with wit and sincerity. My favorite memoir.

I hardly remember this book, but I remember it being more moving than profound...though still--it was hauntingly beautiful.
