I'm not the first reader and certainly won't be the last to swoon over Four, to cheer at Tris's growth, and to hit the middle of the book and be unable to put it down. Roth has an engaging style that makes it easy to slip into a future world where society is divided by factions based on traits and populated by unique characters. Guaranteed you'll read this book and try and mentally fit yourself, your friends, and family into one of the factions. Then, like Tris, begin to question if it's even possible. Of course, you have to read to learn the answer.

Since I work in a public library, and am a librarian, I probably judged this book with a different lens than the average reader. While the book is enjoyable, the regular patrons he described could be at any public library, big or small, in the US. Douglas comes off to me as a bit preachy and cocky, he obviously thinks himself to be far superior to his coworkers, as well as his patrons (although he seems to have slightly more respect for his patrons). If you think you might be interested in more of the inner workings of a public library, than read this book, however realize that there is MUCH more to the profession of librarianship and the institution of libraries than Douglas is able to include.

For years I've known that I probably am an evangelical, but the label comes with stereotypes, both positive and negative, that are often confusing and unhelpful. In this book John Stott lays down his best definition of what and evangelical is in theological terms. As the primary spokesperson for evangelicals globally, Stott would know best what one is. He helpfully puts it within the historical context of evangelicalism as well as fundamentalism (in the process making a clarifying distinction between the two). He then lays what he believes to be the basic theological foundation for all evangelicals, charismatic, justice & peace oriented, or even fundamentalist. His explanations are helpful if intellectual. I recommend this book to anyone who is frustrated by the question "what does it mean to be evangelical?" or just curious as to what it entails. It can get dry, but is not incredibly dense. Overall a worthwhile read.

I'm not giving this book any stars yet because I want to wait and see what happens in the next book. If Clary and Jase are truly siblings I don't like it. I mean does there really need to be a book about the perils of dating your brother? I don't believe they could really be siblings thought so if things turn out ok on that front then I like the book. After finishing this series. I really enjoyed these books. I would love to read more about some of the supporting characters.

The Ancillary’s Mark is a combination of adventure, fantasy, books and romance. Jacob is what you would politely describe as quirky. He’s 18 years old and hasn’t had many girlfriends because of his eccentricities. His alarm clock rings to a James Bond theme, he has a picture of a young Sean Connery next to his bed and he has color coded post-it notes to mark his mood while reading a book. That way when he picks it back up he can channel that mood again before reading on (I actually kind of like that one!). He’s almost a little too weird and perfect but I couldn’t help liking him anyway. There are too few good guys in books these days and he is just one of the sweetest, even with his oddities. Jacob isn’t bothered by any of it though and has always felt a pull to a greater destiny. The stories of great technological advances taking place in a small Tibetan town grab elderly librarian Mr. Maddock’s attention. Mr. Maddock has been a good friend and father figure to Jacob over the years and now has to explain Jacob’s part in the Ancillary legend. The Ancillary is a small blue flower that contains pollen that is believed to give the person who finds it limitless knowledge, allowing them to find their true destiny. This person could shape the future of mankind. The flowers petals are the same shape as a birthmark on Jacobs palm signifying that he may be the one who is meant to find the flower. Unfortunately another man, Marrow (because of his bone markings on his skin) has the same birthmark but has far less humanitarian intentions if he is the one to gain the power over the flower. (FLOWER POWER! Sorry – couldn’t resist) It’s a race to see who can get to the Ancillary in time and which one is destined for greatness. Jacob embarks on his quest with the help of the beautiful Sophia, Mr. Maddock’s granddaughter and Diego, their body guard in a battle of good vs. evil. This isn’t really my genre of reading but it was a fun, fantasy adventure. Cohen writes the legend in great detail and I enjoyed the interactions with the people they meet along the way. One notable character was another quirky young boy, Clark, who is a super hero fanatic with gifts of his own. One thing that bothered me though is Jacob’s little band of heroes were so nice, so eternally optimistic that when confronted with Marrow, who is truly an evil sadistic man, it was almost jarring. Jacob’s side of the story would make for a fun, younger YA read, but some of Marrow’s actions might not be advisable for those same readers. (Note: I’m not a parent so I’m only guessing here. I’m judging by what my nieces and nephews read and enjoy and what their mom would approve of.) There’s a touch of romance and lots of adventure with a nicely wrapped up ending. I kept hoping for some deeper character development. I enjoyed everyone but wasn’t quite on the edge of my seat in a panic over everyone’s fate. Although I love a stand-alone book once in a while this might have been one of those cases that a series would have been in order to slowly develop and mature the characters a bit. A nice blend of fantasy & adventure probably better for a younger reader than myself.

This book was hilarious!
This beautifully expressed tale invites readers into the life of a teenage girl who has become used to living with her mother's psychosis. For one day she tries to piece together a normal life of volunteering at the library, meeting a neighbor, and meeting her mother after work but is haunted by the realities of her existence at home. Estranged from her loving aunt and having no friends, ridiculed for her mother's strange behavior, can she really learn to live.

I decided to read Fireworks by Elizabeth White for a fun summer read. I was not at all disappointed, and even pleasantly surprised at the uplifting story in this romance novel. Former ATF agent Susannah Tait arrives in Mobile, Alabama, with an assignment as an insurance investigator to prove that pyrotechnic artist Quinn Baldwin was responsible for a million-dollar fireworks explosion. Susannah starts out in fine fashion, but is a bit disarmed by the Southern hospitality of her landlady, as well as the unexpected kindness of the object of her investigation. Quinn is a true Southern hero, with a shyness, thrill for the danger of fireworks and a grin you can feel right through the pages. It is quite fun to discover with Susannah some of the pecularities of life in Mobile, as Miss Elva Kay assures her, some ladies have a special dish just for potato salad. Even though Quinn is attracted to Susannah, he takes a firm stand that he will not act on it because she is not a believer. What ensues is a hilarious and completely believeable plan by Quinn’s friends to share the gospel with Susannah. Her conversion testimony is one of the best I’ve ever read in Christian fiction. But there is still the matter of her investigation and her deception to Quinn and all of his friends, which makes for several entertaining plot twists. This novel by Elizabeth White, sprinkled with just enough phrases with fireworks double meaning to keep you on your toes, was a bang-up good read.
Okay, by far one of my favorite books of all time. Heartbreaking though! This book will make anyone wish they could claim Irish heritage. It tells the fictional story of a little Catholic boy in impoverished western Ireland who becomes leader of a rebellious anti-Ulster/Britain group (think IRA or Sinn Fein) and eventually leads a nation-wide revolt... wow, i just couldn't put it down. The deceit and backstabbing that goes on in the book echoes historically accurate events. read it!
