The lupin lady! Another classic. What a blessing to be the daughter of a children's librarian. This book taught me to recognize lupin and to dream of a future of beautifying the world.

also overrated, but better than the da vinci code.

** spoiler alert ** I read his second book - "so many ways to begin" and loved it. Its probably a good job that I read them in this order, as this would have put me off for life. It tells the small details of a street but does so in a many that the characters are largely anonymous and the story jumps from house to house with too much frequency. The thing that works in its favour is that you know there has been a tradgedy and want to keep through it to know what this was. If this hadnt been there and I had known what the author was subsequently capable of, I would have given up a long time before. There is no doubt that its well written and recurring cricket motifs and links to songs (my name is.... emimen) work well but the overall structure just doesnt work for me. The ending bumps it up a star, where the tragedy is not what you are led to believe (a young boy run over) but someone dying alone in their house and not bein found for three days.

Good grief, what a book! If you think you know Islam, read this book. If you don't know Islam, read this book. Ayann Hirsi Ali writes her story in a way unlike most memoirs. You don't have the feeling that things are being glossed over or forgotten or exaggerated in any way. Since reading her book, I've decided I need to learn more about Islam, immigration policy, Africa, Holland.... This is a terrific read.
Amazing and thorough biography of J. Robert Oppenheimer. Very thorough, but not a detail was wasted. How every biography should be.
Although not always pleasant, this book drew me in more than the Kite Runner. The danger in which these people lived is heartbreaking, but inspiring. You could feel what they were going through every step of the way. Well worth a read.
I became addicted to Edward.

I can see why this is a classic.

Not as good as the Charterhouse of Parma, but equally fascinating. Stendhal gives you a protagonist who isn't very sympathetic and then gets you to sympathize with him; no small feat! He is a terrific when it comes to the psychology of the characters, especially when he shows the distance between what one character thinks the other is thinking and what that other character actually is thinking. While ostensibly about post-Revolutionary France, the novel is really just two love stories back-to-back and how social class tends to muck things up. Thoroughly entertaining and a brisk read despite its length.
