Update 1/3/12: I finished this work on Christmas Eve 2011, a perfect time to finish the book, where Dante, after his long journey through hell, purgatory and then heaven, meets God. This is one of the most complex and layered works I've ever read. It was worth the effort to work my way through such a great poem-- maybe the greatest ever written. I will gladly read it again-- like scripture, you get something new out of it every time you read it. Update June 2011: I finished reading Inferno for the second time. I read this with various commentaries this time, to try to understand more of the symbolism. I have the Divine Comedy lecture series by The Great Courses which is excellent for understanding the historical and political background of Dante's day. I also read the CliffsNotes of Inferno and the Wikipedia entry for Inferno, which has pretty good summaries/analysis. Another couple of good resources is the artwork of the Divine Comedy by William Blake and Gustave Dore. These have helped to enhance my study. I have quite a few other translations of The Divine Comedy besides this one that I like to compare with ( Mark Musa and Allen Mandelbaum translations), but it's the Carlyle-Okey-Wicksteed one that I keep coming back to. It has helpful footnotes for each canto, but not an overwhelming number of them. The lines of poetry are not arranged poetically as in most other translations. It's arranged more like a novel, which I like. If I was all alone on a desert island, this is the book I'd most want with me.

“The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya” is a novel based on the popular Japanese comics of the same title. The story revolves around a girl who gets the reputation for being a strange and mysterious outcast by her own desire. When introducing herself in class she says she, “I have no interest in ordinary humans. If there are any aliens, time travelers, sliders or espers here, come join me. That is all.” After barely befriending a fellow classmate she decides that in order to find those few who are special and extraordinary she starts a club at her school, the SOS Brigade. Haruhi is determined to find the time travelers, aliens and espers and will force her way onto anyone to get her way. She snatches and forces other students into her club and with each passing day she realizes that those aliens aren’t being found. Kyon though knows otherwise and is forced to keep quiet. He also knows that Haruhi is special and things look much different than initially speculated. Can this mean, forceful and eccentric girl really hold the world in her hands –literally? The characters in this book are carried and almost as eccentric as Haruhi herself. There’s the shy quiet girl who reads during club meetings, there’s the sweet unassuming pretty girl who’s used as sexy recruiter for the club and there’s the alien seeking exchange student. These kids all hold their secrets which are closely tied to a secret they all know about Haruhi –she can destroy the universe –only if she knew it though. The story is quirky and funny at times but mostly for the fact that the cultural gap makes it silly. What do I mean? The story is based on Japanese manga and has been thus translated into English prose. I see the cultural influence and the Japanese thinking. But mostly I see the culture as a whole which makes it hard for me, who’s never read manga, to relate and really enjoy the story. The story, which is narrated by guy who sees the sexuality in the characters made it hard for me to really get into the story since I am a girl and do not see other women in the same light as Kyon does. I recommend this to guys. Period. Most guys will enjoy the male view point and also the sci-fi aspect of the story. Also, there’s enough hot girls and action to keep them entertained. I give this book a 72/100 C- Characters- 15 Plot- 17 Writing- 15 Originality- 15 Re-Readability- 10 http://reveriemedia.blogspot.com/
