I LOVED the unique plot and the main girls and the confidant, mysterious, slightly Byronic main male character.

This might be my favorite Picoult book so far. Talk about moving aside the gender stereotype of favoring the women's perspective of "what really happened." I am so glad that someone has finally dared to show us what life might be like for someone who truly did no wrong. And as usual, there is always an unbelievable twist at the end! The What-If: What if...a man was falsely accused of sexual conduct with a minor?

Though the concepts in this book are old-hat to anyone who has been involved in the feminist movement for some time (at least, in the feminist circles I frequent), this is an excellent book for those less familiar with many of the sex-positive concepts of feminism. It was an enjoyable read even for someone to whom none of this is new information -- Valenti has a certain way of phrasing things that hits home.

As a passionate fan of virtually anything that falls under the umbrella of "Classical Music" (particularly opera, lieder, tone poems and symphonies), this book contained a lot of good information about nine of Central Europes greatest conductors. (The author selected these men from the larger group of ensemble musical directors of Austro-German heritage who worked between the mid-19th and -20th centuries.) Because of my very specific interests, the time spent reading this book was worthwhile. That time, however, required a conscious effort. The writing is formulaic to a fault. While it might be said that this ensured that all musicians were given fair treatment relative to each other, it also led to narrative that was painfully unimaginative. I found the predictability of the template this writer used wearing. There were also more than a handful of redundant phrases and a fair number of points that were simply restated in slightly different form. This rephrasing sometimes occured in neighboring sentences. Seriously. Worst of all were the few times that a sentence appeared to exist only as a means toward making the book longer. (To whit: "The orchestral works he programmed in Los Angeles generally fell into one of two categories: those he had previously conducted and those that were new to him".) Most of us were disabused of this tendency in grade school. Yet I read the entire book. And so we are back to square one and my deep interest in this material. (Yes, I am repeating an earlier point using a different sentence structure. It seems I *have* learned something from this book.) Only those with similar interests should even consider reading this book. All others - insomniacs included - are better off with a different tome.

from the first page i knew that this book was going to be different then any i had read in a long time. i was right. sucking me into a world where you're not sure who is right and who is wrong it is full of love, hate, lust, fury and curiosity. emotions that we find in ourselves everyday and in their different levels too. at some points they are suppressed while others they come out in all of their fury. i love this book. i read it years ago and it still has held a special place on my bookshelf. each time i read it (and i've read it over 40 times no joke) i get something new and still feel excited and surprised. its a great read that anyone with love for fantasy will enjoy.

This installment is laugh out loud funny. Jaz Parks is possessed (can you believe it?) and not only that but she has other personalities inside her head (herself as a teen, her grandmother and her sister, Evie) and they all have conversations with each other and Jaz. It really was just too funny. To make it even crazier Jaz has arrived in Australia with a vampire (Vayl), a psychic (Cassandra), a techie (Bergman), a dog (Jack) and a robokittie. Yup the fun is just beginning. Oh wait we can't forget the gnomes. And I don't mean those cute statues you put in your yard. These are killer Nazi gnomes intent on taking out the NASA station in Canberra for interfering with Saturn which some how is screwing with their God (go figure). All in all, this book is a laugh a minute and I loved every minute of it.

For some reason, I'm always a sucker for books/movies/stories that have a strong father-son dynamic. So when I picked up The Road in a bookstore one day and read the plot summary, I knew I had to read it. This is a story about a post-apocalyptic world in which a father and his young son are trekking across the barren wasteland of a country, doing their best to scrounge for food while avoiding cannibalistic raiders along the way. This is not a horror story or a thriller, but there are moments of true terror in this book. I'm pretty sure I said "Holy shit!" aloud a few times while reading. This was a new experience for me, as I had never really been frightened while reading a book before. But the core of the story is the man and his boy and how their love for one another keeps them going. Each of them would do absolutely anything for the other. And Cormac McCarthy does a fantastic job of depicting this relationship. As a reader, you really want both of them to make it.
