1967 Caldecott Medal Winner Watercolor and maybe some kind of sponge painting or block printing. I like the way the cat was done--it reminds me of Japanese-style ink paintings. A little girl learns the difference between fantasizing and dangerous lies when she gets her friend Thomas into trouble after telling him where to go to find an imaginary baby kangaroo. I thought it was realistic that the girl would have problems after her mother had died, but the message came across as too didactic for me.

Another fantastic thriller featuring Gabriel Allon and many other familiar characters from Silva's previous novels.

A Christmas gift from my ex boyfriend's mother... are you kidding me? I wanted to die when I unwrapped this... But, we did read it through once... I left the book at his place... The fact that Kim and husband are divorced now kinda killed their rankings...

Hannah Garrity has a precognitive ability that reminds me of the plot in Tom Cruise's Minority Report. Nothing good ever seems to come of possessing this ability. In Hannah's case, it leads her into a dangerous situation when she tries to help a young girl she believes is in trouble. Graphic language describes a prolonged ordeal, peppered with many flashbacks of Hannah's life. Jason McIntyre's realistic writing style is unsettling to read at times. The story's antagonist lacks any redeeming qualities, which leaves no room for pity or empathy. The reader might consider this character more comic than disgusting, except for the depraved ideas he utilizes for his own entertainment. The author's plot isn't original, but he's taken a theme and given it his own unique twist. That's what makes this story work.

so, i do feel like this was a fill-in book for the series, but it did add a lot that i liked. however, i couldn't shake the feeling that this was so much like new moon, in that the same plot complications were present. the romance is thwarted in a way, a fill-in is kind of found (i really saw a lot of comparisons between bella/jacob and bianca/balty). HOWEVER. this is a much smarter, tangled story. the plot throws in twists and turns, and it moves quickly (i read this in one night). i LOVE balthazar, and i was hurting more for him than i was lucas and bianca. i also loved that we saw more of raquel and courtney, and RANULF!! ranulf and vic being friends is maybe my favorite thing EVER. i heart ranulf. A LOT. i didn't even notice all the plot twists as they happened, because i was so engaged in the story and everything just flowed. i don't get everything that is going on with ms. bethany and the school, but i don't think i'm supposed to, yet. the black cross, of course, makes another appearance, and the deal with the ghost story made me gasp at the end - though then i realized all the clues i missed along the way. i love that! i have no idea how i'm going to wait for the next book, in all honesty - i am NOT satisfied with that cliffhanger! i mean, there are SO MANY PROBLEMS. ::weeps:: but i still love how real the teenagers are. how i love bianca (though i thought she wasn't as cool this time, but that's because i have a total issue with the "ONE TRUE LOVE" teenager deal), and balthazar, and bianca's parents, and dana and kate and. mostly i'm just ticked i have to wait so long for the next book. ;)

I was disappointed with this book. I loved The Piano Teacher and Wonderful Wonderful Times. This was a bit of a dud. For starters, it was repetitive. Mostly, the woman's husband just hit her and had humiliating sex with her. Rape might be a better word. I get that she has issues with male/female relations, but this was just sorta absurd. Despite all the graphic sex, it was even kinda boring. I was drawn in to her other novels and thought about them for weeks after I read them. I couldn't stop talking about them. This one, I put down, had a stiff drink, and went on my slightly less merry way.

There are no words! In my top 3. The woman can put together the most beautiful sentence, invent the most witty dialogue, and create the most amusing and intelligent characters, all with a gentle satirical undertow. I love it.

Quite a bit lighter than some of our other choices. Good selection for a summer read. I felt the situations the main characters found themselves in were believable and I enjoyed seeing how they resolved their problems. Character portrayal was well done for Fiona and Joe...I would have liked to delve deeper into Nicolas's mind. His particular situation was certainly dramatic for the time setting.

I agree with the "book-lovers book" and the "oh, come on" plot at the end. It sucked me in though. I could not stop reading this book. I loved the beautiful settings, the smell of the old books and the quest for the truth from a dying woman who has lied her whole life.
